Sir George and the Dragon, but make it kid-friendly

Sir Small and the Dragonfly by Jane O'Connor (Author), John O'Brien (Illustrator)

May 10, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

It’s a cute little story about Lady Teena, resident of the village of Pee Wee, who one day is kidnapped by a dragonfly. After the Butcher, the Baker, and the Candlestick Maker (a tried and true trio for all children’s stories) nope out of the quest (knaves, all of them) Sir Small, a knight smaller than a toothpick, rides off on his little pony to rescue her. I suppose that’s because Dragonflies will eat damsels? Or does it want to keep her just because? Not […]

“If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older.”

Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran, illustrated by Barbara Cooney

May 8, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

There across the road, it looked like any rocky hill—nothing but sand and rocks, and some old wooden boxes. But it was a special place. And all children needed to go there was a long stick and a soaring imagination. Every once in a while, I pull one of my childhood books off the shelf to look through it again, because I love the art, or I still like the story. Roxaboxen is one book that I look at over and over again because of […]

This is not really a book review

Tales of A Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume

June 30, 2021 by caragwapa 5 Comments

I read in the CBR update emails that Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing was up for discussion in the next Zoom call and I jumped into rereading it not only because I was behind on my CBR reading (and this was a sure quick read), but because I love this book!  I was ultimately not able to join the discussion (time zones 🙁 ) but I’m so glad I read it again. I loved Are Your There God? when I was in Grade school […]

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

March 26, 2021 by enaj Mcbob Leave a Comment

In keeping with the spirit of not reading the books ahead of time, I was unaware of the plot before reading The Gruffalo to Tobes.  I need to once again compliment Axel Scheffler on the amazing illustrations as they helped to keep everyone focused on the page. I think I may have mis-judged the book though as there’s a lot of text and for a child under one it probably took too long to read.  In case that was mis-understood I am referring to me […]

Pro-bookworm propaganda

May 18, 2016 by NTE 1 Comment

You know I’m all about anything that makes reading seem like the enjoyable pastime we all know it truly is, so Carmen Oliver’s Bears Make the Best Reading Buddies hits my niche dead on. Adelaide has no need for her teacher to assign her a reading buddy; She has brought her own – a bear. Her bear likes to help her pick out good books to read, is a great listener, and curls up  to create a comfy space for her to read in.  Adelaide’s […]
