“What is a game? It’s tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. It’s a possibility of infinite rebirth.”

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

August 12, 2022 by jomidi 4 Comments

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin is a pure delight. The best book I have read all year, and now one of my favorites ever. Zevin is the author of one of my other favorite books of all time, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, I was so excited to hear about this book especially when I discovered it was about video game designers. The story starts when Sam and Sadie meet in a play area in a hospital. Sam is undergoing treatment […]

“Stranger, Whoever you are, Open this to learn what will amaze you”

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthoy Doerr

July 26, 2021 by jomidi Leave a Comment

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr is an epic story.  My ARC copy was over 600 pages long.  Doerr, who won the Pulitzer Price for All The Light We Cannot See, has woven together the stories of five people in three different times, connected with a sixth story, the ancient Greek story of Cloud Cuckoo Land. In modern day Idaho we have Zeno,  an old man, orphaned at a young age, who was changed by his experience as a POW during the Korean War.   Along with […]

Weaving three historic times through a castle

The Women of Chateau Lafayette by STEPHANIE DRAY

May 30, 2021 by jomidi Leave a Comment

The Women of Chateau Lafayette is Stephanie Dray’s masterpiece.  She previously co-authored books about Jefferson’s daughter and Hamilton’s wife and this time she takes on Lafayette’s wife without her usual co-writer Laura Kamoie. The book carefully weaves the story of three women whose lives center around Lafayette’s castle in Chavaniac, France.  The first protagonist is Madame Lafayette herself, starting in 1774 with her wedding to the country bumpkin Lafayette, and progressing through both the American and French revolutions.  The second is Beatrice Chanler in 1914, […]

“There’s always the sun. Always, always, always the sun.”

Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

April 9, 2021 by jomidi Leave a Comment

Klara and the Sun  is the strange, sweet, and highly enjoyable new book by Nobel Prize-winning British writer Kazuo Ishiguro.  This odd fantasy world is typical of what to expect from Ishiguro.  The story takes place in a dystopian future where AF (Artificial Friend) robots are purchased as companions for children.  The story is narrated by Klara who is an AF.  Having the story told from a robot’s point of view may seem odd, but you grow to love Klara as she innocently tries to […]

A Thoughtful Read

The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall

June 24, 2020 by jomidi Leave a Comment

The best word I could find for The Dearly Beloved by Cara Wall is thoughtful.  I know that is strange and I am certain I have never described a book as thoughtful before, but it fits so well. The Dearly Beloved is the story of Charles and Lily and James and Nan, two couples with minister husbands.  The book tells their complete stories from their meetings in college, their marriages, and their lives as co-ministers at a New York City church in the turbulent 60’s.  […]
