a mermaid’s tail made of donkey skin (a dual cbr13bingo and #cannonbookclub adventure!)

Deerskin by Robin McKinley

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

well, not exactly. What we have here are two retellings of classic fairy tales: Charles Perrault’s deeply upsetting Donkeyskin (recently reviewed by our very own BlackRaven) and Hans Christian Andersen’s  also unsettling The Little Mermaid. Both of these entries are picks for our upcoming #cannonbookclub event- and I’ll be discussing Deerskin further during our Zoom- but in the meantime, let these two help you choose your pick(s)! Also- both of these tales of girls on the cusp of womanhood have been reclaimed and retold by women. […]

CBR13 Bingo: Book Club (the July selection of my fantasy/sci-fi book club here in Oslo. I read it in early June) Official book description: The surviving members of a forgotten teenage detective club (and their dog) must reunite as broken adults to finally solve the terrifying case that ruined them all and sent the wrong man to prison. Scooby Doo and the gang never had to do this! 1990. The teen detectives once known as the Blyton Summer Detective Club (of Blyton Hills, a small […]

Hacker Adventure with a Kitty

Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson

August 5, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 11 Book Club In preparation for CBR book club in September, I picked up Alif the Unseen; I chose this one since I’d already read one of the other options (The Bear and the Nightingale) and I picked up the other option off the library shelf, flipped through it, and decided ‘Nope, not my style, this writing would drive me nuts’. Having now read Alif the Unseen, I have to say, good job whoever suggested this. In some ways, the story reminded me of […]

Where is la joie de vivre?

Jules et Jim by Henri-Pierre Roche

July 13, 2021 by Merryn 1 Comment

CBR13bingo – Book Club; My local book club is reading classics this year, and our July read is Jules et Jim, the source material for the French New Wave movie Jules and Jim. The introduction and afterword of my edition of this book, and other reviews, told me that it is a celebration of a deep friendship between Jules and Jim and a love triangle where “all parties are free and equal, always loyal to one another”. That what “only counts for the three of […]

The Next-to-Last Time I was Shot Out of a Cannon (and other often strangely fantastical stories)

Fly Already by Etgar Keret

June 8, 2021 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

One of many things I like about my current book club is that the choosing of titles is a collaboration (involving initial nominations and then a round of voting) to determine our reads for the full year.  As a result, the books are a mix of things I have heard of (and want to read and/or have read) and books/authors that are totally unknown to me.  This book of short stories by Etgar Keret, an Israeli author, falls into the latter category. After the first […]
