“‘So their leader looks pretty dead’,” said Istvhan, who was at the point where a corpse was a welcome break in the tension.”

Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher (author), Joel Richards (Narrator)

January 16, 2025 by dreadpiratekel 4 Comments

Thanks to Wicherwill’s review of the latest book in the Saint of Steel series last year, I was reminded that I needed to get back to reading this series!  I read the first book in the back in 2023 and enjoyed it, and then a million (approximately) other books jumped in between me and the other books in the series.  But I’m back into it! Plot-wise, this novel is about Istvhan, a paladin (god-touched warrior whose order was prone to berserker fits brought on by […]

What Now?

What Now? by Shari Low

June 12, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Oh no.  I feel terrible for saying this because I really love the 1st book so much, but this was just awful. Also this is not a romance, this is women’s fiction. And was not a great sequel to what came before. Next time readers may want to re-think begging an author for an update on characters they wrote from 20 years ago. I beg of you, just read book 1 and stop there. Following up with Carly Cooper 20 years later was a disappointment. […]

What Happens After We Win?

The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson

February 28, 2022 by Ale Leave a Comment

I’ve come to love reading the author’s pages in books. If ever a new writer felt that they were the only one struggling with their manuscript, all they have to do is read the author’s note of their current favorite book to find out everyone struggles from the same issues. Sanderson, for all his prolific publishing, is not immune from writing troubles, as he plainly says in his author’s note from The Well of Ascension. The Mistborn books were his first series, and the issues […]

An epic romance sizzles during an Odyssey quest to save the realms

June 8, 2018 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Breath of Fire is the second book in Amanda Bouchet’s Kingmaker Chronicles series. This novel picks up moments after the end of book one with our heroine, Catalia Fisa, healing from deadly wounds. She has a knack for playing fast and loose with her life, much to the chagrin of her lover Griffin. Cat is the Kingmaker, she can detect lies from anyone. Possession of her is quite handy for anyone in power.  Cat’s mother, Alpha Fisa, would rather manipulate her powers to maintain her iron fist upon […]

Min Kamp part II: Where the picture of the smoking author embarrasses me at school.

December 3, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

This second book of the long novel is both more of the same and completely different. This novel should never be confused with the boring day to day details of a life from the beginning to the end, but more so a collected thematic explorations of moments, events, and periods of time in a life. This novel starts with a breathless depiction of taking a passel of kids to a childless house on a kind of vacation from Norway to Sweden and the various considerations, […]

Anarchy & Death: A Love Story

December 20, 2014 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

The Darkest Kiss is a love story between two immortals in modern times. Anya is the (minor) goddess of Anarchy, who loves lollipops, flirting and causing trouble which can sometimes end up in countries going to war. She is on the run from the other gods using her power of teleportation to wander about the earth. She soon becomes obsessed with Lucien, an ancient warrior who is cursed by the Lord of the Underworld. He basically is a grim reaper forced to usher souls to the other side. If he refuses, he actually falls […]
