An interesting, academic glimpse at intersex issues connected with theology.

July 4, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

As you all know, I’ve been working on expanding my scholarly reading in LGBT issues and arguments, so that I can help non- or not-yet-affirming Christian students in their own breadth of knowledge. I decided that I needed to move towards the + in the LGBT+ acronyms, and so this book was checked out from the library. I haven’t read too much on intersex issues, apart from an interesting I.W. Gregorio novel I had read last year, so I thought it would be important to […]

“Bitches gots to learn.”

July 4, 2016 by bonnie 1 Comment

I’ve been seeing reviews for the first volume of Bitch Planet pop up on CBR and Goodreads, so I was curious to see what it was all about. I’m always interested in new graphic novel volumes, especially while I wait not-so-patiently for the new volume of Saga to release. I figured it would be good for me to diversify, especially with woman-centered comics. Bitch Planet promises to be all that. Read my full review for my thoughts on intersectional feminism, as seen in this comic.

Giving voice to the silenced

July 1, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I faintly remember the reporting of the Catholic Church scandal in Boston back in 2002, but I definitely have seen the aftershocks in many churches beyond the Catholic faith having to deal with sexual assault scandals and the inability of the churches to protect their parishioners from molestation and assault. Therefore, I was highly interested when the movie Spotlight was released and then won the Oscar for Best Picture of 2015. One of my students had read the book Betrayal for his book/movie project, and […]

A new curriculum initiative to try!

July 1, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I’m always in the market for reading material that invigorates my pedagogy, so when The Chancellor sent me a recommendation for Making Curriculum Pop on Goodreads, I was intrigued. This is a K-12 educational book, but I often find that I can adapt to the college level, particularly in my Composition courses. Pam Goble and Ryan Goble (brother and sister, not husband and wife) are both educators, and they want to incorporate many kinds of written, verbal, visual, and cultural texts in their learning instruction […]

An excellent, heavy book about rape

July 1, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Rape is a serious subject, and it’s being discussed much more openly and frequently these days. It’s both a good and a bad thing. It’s good that we’re slowly dismantling misperceptions and letting survivors tell their stories, and it’s bad that rape culture is still a thing and people are still being stubborn assholes about shaming the victims and not actually bringing rapists to responsibility. I won’t get on my soapbox, but I am trying to read enlightening and educational material to help guide conversations […]

An elegant novel about love in an oppressive time

July 1, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

What I like about Oscar season (now many months removed from us) is that I get to know books that I had never known existed until I see them made into movies. And then I introduce myself to authors and ideas that I enjoy. Patricia Highsmith’s elegant novel The Price of Salt, adapted to the film Carol was one such example. I still haven’t see the movie yet, but I’m very much looking forward to seeing how it turned out. Find out why I give […]
