The Tao of Daisy Duke

Open Book by Jessica Simpson

April 28, 2020 by Halbs 1 Comment

I’m roughly the same age as Jessica Simpson, although prior to reading Open Book I didn’t know much about her other than that she had a reality show with Nick Lachey in the 2000s. She also played Daisy Duke in the Johnny Knoxville/Sean William Scott movie Dukes of Hazzard. (I saw that in theaters.) Since I love a good celebrity autobiography, I gave this one a shot. Glad I did, because it only took a few days for me to listen to the whole audiobook. Open Book […]

We have a diet-culture epidemic

Anti-Diet: Reclaim Your Time, Money, Well-Being, and Happiness Through Intuitive Eating by Christy Harrison

April 25, 2020 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This is probably the last food/body/eating book I’ll review for some time as, honestly, I’m tired of thinking about it! If you were to go through all of my Goodreads list in the last few years you’d see a sort of accidental autobiography of health and body phases – the “Wellness Diet” phase (Whole 30, keto, various “lifestyle” books, etc), then some disordered eating books, and then acceptance books like Intuitive Eating, Caroline Dooner’s The F It Diet, and finally this one. I’m glad I’m wear […]

The human body is a disgusting miracle

Navel Gazing by Michael Ian Black

February 10, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

It’s so refreshing to read a man’s take on body insecurity, because man does it feel like society acts as though it’s an exclusively female problem. Obviously the expectations for women are higher and beauty standards are unfairly applied to women more than men, but the idea that body image issues are strictly female is often twisted into describing them as vain. So, Michael Ian Black’s insecurities about his feet and his waistline are welcome, particularly as they are written in his typically humorous tone, […]

You Can’t Hate Yourself Into Health

The F*ck It Diet: Eating Should Be Easy by Caroline Dooner

December 27, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

Earlier this year I’ve reviewed a book about disordered eating and mentioned that eating disorders were common in my profession. After reading that book, I did what any smart person does; I read the comments on the internet! Really! There are some useful subreddits about disordered eating and intuitive eating, and many of those mentioned actor/creative Caroline Dooner’s The F*ck It Diet. I honestly dismissed the book because of its trendy use of f*ck in the title. It felt like it was screaming, “This isn’t your parents’ […]

“My father believes hunger is in the mind. I know differently. I know that hunger is in the mind and the body and the heart and the soul.”

September 14, 2017 by narfna 2 Comments

“For so long, I closed myself off from everything and everyone. Terrible things happened and I had to shut down to survive. I was cold, I’ve been told. I often write stories about women who are perceived as cold and resent that perception. I write these women because I know what it’s like to have so much warmth roiling beneath the skin’s surface, ready to be found. I am not cold. I wasn’t ever cold. My warmth was hidden far away from anything that could bring […]
