Sexy contemporary romance

Inevitable Seductions by Christina C. Jones

July 9, 2025 by LB Leave a Comment

Inevitable Seductions fulfills the “favorite” square on CBR17 Bingo. CCJ is one of my favorite authors and this year I’ve given myself the soft goal of reading her entire backlist, which admittedly is a feat when this woman has written nearly 100 books! I’ve mostly been reading via audio, and a good chunk of her catalogue is available via hoopla. Inevitable Seductions is one of her new-to-me books and I’ve made it up to her 2016 releases, and read more than 30 of her books […]

Love the family history, hate the ableism

Spilling the Tea by Brenda Jackson

May 10, 2025 by LB Leave a Comment

I’ve never read Brenda Jackson, though she’s been on my radar as a Black romance author and a well-loved author by many, and this sounded like exactly the kind of book I would enjoy with lots of family history and secrets. I did really enjoy the story and the family elements, and a part of me wants to go through the backlist for more about the Madaris family, but I also feel like I’m not the right audience for these books (and I’m sure a […]

These complete strangers just have NO respect for the fact that they might be your boyfriend in your head these days, sheesh.

Grow Something by Christina C. Jones

December 16, 2024 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Grow Something is a perfect novella. In a few pages Jones introduces us to two characters, puts them in the context of their families and community, and gets us invested in their relationship. This is a novella in the Equilibrium series, centered around the Mahogany Heights neighborhood, where a Black community and Black businesses thrive. When Hudson’s fiancé texts him to say she won’t be at their wedding, he takes himself to the door of Summer’s produce store and community garden, Grown. Summer has been crushing […]

Joy, fusion bbq, music, and love jump off the page

A Little Kissing Between Friends by Chencia C. Higgins

May 14, 2024 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I fell in love with this book in the first paragraph. I fell in love with Cyn and her daddy in the first chapter. I fell in love with Juleesa in Chapter 2 and by Chapter 5 I loved everybody and everything about this book. A Little Kissing Between Friends is a love letter to multi-generational community, friendships, music and food. Chencia C. Higgins starts with Cyn remembering the day she let her daddy know that she liked girls. It came out as a part of […]

Fun & Delightful Black Sapphic Romance

A Little Kissing Between Friends by Chencia C. Higgins

April 25, 2024 by LB 1 Comment

I feel like I’ve been waiting for this book forever, so as soon as I got approved for an arc I had to immediately jump in. And I am so glad I did! I’ve loved Chencia’s books since I read Wolves of West Texas, and seeing her story-telling grow and develop is just amazing. A Little Kissing Between Friends is such a delight of a book and had me laughing constantly. The friendship between Jucee and Cyn is so wonderful, and I also love how […]

People like Gen came only a few times in life and I’d learned the hard way not to ever waste those moments.

Out of Office by A.H. Cunningham

April 11, 2024 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

A.H. Cunningham’s Afro-Caribbean Black romance, Out of Office, is gorgeous. The settings are lush. The emotions are lush. The story is rich in culture. Cunningham has delivered a thoughtful and spicy contemporary romance that grapples with how to live in a world that demands constant production. Gabriella is an up and comer at a hotel/resort chain based in Miami. Her mother is well known for mentoring Black women on corporate success and she expects Gabriella to rise to the top. Adrián has already had a taste […]
