It’s a Cannonball, Bitch!

December 2, 2017 by ElCicco 5 Comments

I reviewed Bitch Planet Book 1 for CBR8, right before the 2016 election, and at the time, I wondered how a dystopia such as DeConnick imagines could come about — a patriarchy where submissive women are placed on a pedestal and “non-compliance” makes one a criminal. A year later it is easier to see how that might happen. On a daily basis we bear witness to the many ways women and minorities can so easily be stripped of their rights and criminalized. In Book 2, […]

Vol. 2 just as non-compliant and awesome as Vol. 1.

I waited for this trade for soooo loooong of a time. And then it wasn’t long enough, like in terms of page length; I read it in about twenty minutes (cackling through most of it), and then it was over and I was sad. But it was very good. And now we have to wait even longer for Vol. 3. These are the woes you are in for when you read an ongoing comic series, but especially this one, which is agony. Vol. 2 opens […]

I would be non-compliant in so many different ways

July 9, 2016 by Malin 3 Comments

“In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. Mother Earth, we used to say, before we understood. Space is the mother who receives us, you see? Earth is the father. And your father has cast you out. For your trespasses, your gluttony, your pride, your weakness, and your wickedness are such that you are beyond correction and castigation. Like a cancer you must be excised from the world that bore you. For the well-being of us all, lest your sickness spread. You will […]

I volunteer

3.5 stars I can tell this is going to be a very fun comic series to follow, bringing the list of comic series I follow up to 2 (Saga is the other.) The first volume of Bitch Planet is very introductory, as we meet our main Bitches, learn a little of some of their backstories, and get a broad overview of what’s going on at Bitch Planet (a derogatory term for the off-Earth prison, where the actual name is some euphemistic acronym to do with […]

I’m Keeping the Interlibrary Loan Librarians Guessing

February 20, 2016 by Jenny S 2 Comments

After reading a good review in CBR7 and many more earlier this year, I used my college’s Interlibrary Loan to request Bitch Planet: Book One and I was not disappointed. This comic poses a future or maybe an alternative present where “compliance” is required of all women and that means conforming to the wishes of men—being passive, agreeable, and of course, thin. Society attempts to correct those who don’t “comply” but those who aren’t able to be “saved” are sent off world—to the titled “Bitch Planet.” I […]

A Wild Ride

January 17, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

What in the world did I just read?! Nothing could have prepared me for the wild ride Bitch Planet took me on. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything so in-your-face before, but I liked it. Bitch Planet is like The Handmaid’s Tale times 11. Basically, any woman deemed noncompliant is rounded up and sent to a jail planet officially known as Auxiliary Compliance Outpost, colloquially known as Bitch Planet. Who decides if women are noncompliant? A council of holy “fathers” meets to judge offenders […]
