Sunny, you’re a fine girl

Sunny by Celia Krampien

February 7, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sunny is a cute and interesting story about seeing the (literally) Sunny Side of Life. Celia Krampien has created a story with a good flow to the text and the cute illustrations make this a comfortable read. Most ages will enjoy following Sunny (our girl narrator) as she goes along the path to her destination. If there is one thing about the book I do not like is the fact that Sunny might be too optimistic. I cannot imagine that everything is good. Or is […]

Nesting by Henry Cole

January 31, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Putting away future publications reader copies to our staff shelves, Nesting by Henry Cole came up. The blue of the cover popped up. I was not sure what was going on. Was it going to be about all birds, robins, hummingbirds? The contrast of the grey/white and blue was (yes, a bit dramatic) mesmerizing. I had put it in my, “Not reading now” pile, but kept thinking I probably should read it. It was not a wasted read. I give this book a five for […]

A loving bond grows between the two unlikely friends

The Scarecrow. by Beth Ferray

September 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Erin and Terry Fan are at it again with their lovely illustrations in The Scarecrow. These works of art are the right colors, tone and filled with details that fit the theme and feel of the story. And while the story is a tad too sugary (in parts) for me, the illustrations help calm that effect.     With that said, Beth Ferry created a lovely book about love, friendship and possibly you could even say that it is a little bit about adoption as […]

Next time you say you can’t, think of the hummingbird

Hummingbird by Nicola Davies

May 9, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wow! This book is just that, WOW. The other day, I saw Hummingbird on one of the receiver’s desks at work. I saw this lushly colorful cover by Jane Ray. There were flashy reds, bold blues and gracious greens. I figured this was going to be either something beyond amazing or fall flat and only have its art going for it. Thankfully, it is beyond amazing. While there is nothing earth shattering about this book, Nicola Davies beautifully blends a story and hummingbird facts seamlessly. […]

As the illustrations grow crowded friendship grows too

The Song of Spring by Hendrik Jonas

March 21, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Song of Spring sat behind Hungry Bunny in the Spring/Easter display and since I did not want to head back to work right away, I took a minute with it.   Hendrik Jonas’s book has a little interaction to it, which I thought tied it in nicely with Claudia Rueda’s book. This interaction of saying the sounds of the animals you encounter is a bit more traditional than the actual moving of the other book. But you still will be having the child listener […]

Why sing ONE song when you can sing four?

The Blue Songbird by  Vern Kousky

Bird Watch by Christie Matheson

Bird Builds a Nest: A First Science Storybook by Martin Jenkins

Warbler Wave by April Pulley Sayre

March 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Even though the weather has other plans, the calendar is saying that Spring is around the corner. Therefore, the Spring/Easter displays are in full bloom. And on said display for children’s books at work, we have several bird books. Therefore, a lovely theme of birds grace the below reviews. The first book I want to mention is The Blue Songbird by Vern Kousky is a sweet book about finding your “personal song”, it is obvious this story has been done before (cue: Happy Feet I and II). However, […]
