All Fluff and No Substance Makes “Nicholson” a Dull Read

January 9, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

If nothing else, Marc Eliot’s biography of Jack Nicholson reminded me why I don’t typically read biographies of still living people when the subject has no involvement with the book. In relying exclusively on archival interviews and firsthand accounts from a handful of Nicholson’s friends Eliot has put together a superficial account of a man whose life is anything but superficial. Nicholson: A Biography recounts all of Jack’s life from his childhood to arriving in Hollywood up to 2013, yet when it was over I […]

The Rise and Fall and Rise and Fall and Rise of Butch Walker

January 4, 2015 by TylerDFC 1 Comment

I’ve been a long time fan of song writer, producer, guitarist, and singer Butch Walker and have had this book on my “To Read” list for quite a while. I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint. For those who don’t know him, Butch was the lead singer/songwriter for the 90’s one-hit-wonder band Marvelous 3. You may have heard their great single “Freak of the Week” back in the day or the 2 excellent albums they put out (Hey Album […]

Tasty memories

December 30, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Relish is this awesome graphic novel + recipe book hybrid by Lucy Knisley. She details her love for food with illustrated stories from her childhood. Her mom is a chef while her dad’s a gourmet foodie. Together, they expose her to culinary delights from birth as she tags along to restaurant kitchens and gatherings of her mom’s food scene pals. Even though her parents divorce, they continue to impart their own culinary wisdom to their daughter. Each chapter ends with a personal recipe from that particular era of her life. Her […]

“Money Doesn’t Give You Class, It Just Gives You Money”

August 13, 2014 by elecamel Leave a Comment

Confession time, I love the Real Housewives franchise. It is a phenomenal machine of hair and fake lashes and egos. It’s all the glory of gossip with none of the pain of hurting someone you know and care about. This is not a secret shame for me; anyone who knows me in real life likely knows my proclivities for terrible but well produced reality television, particularly of the Bravo variety. Andy Cohen, you own me. Given this love for all things Real (it’s not) and […]

Who would have thought?

May 23, 2014 by Robyn Robotron 3 Comments

I went to school with Ben Montgomery.  We weren’t friends as he was popular and I was a punk rock snob.  Through the power of social media, we’ve become friendly almost 20 years later.  He’s also become quite the writer, and I would have never have guessed he had it in him.  Just like I imagine people would have never guessed a 67-year-old woman could hike 2000+ miles with barely more than the clothes on her back.

This Star Won’t Go Out

May 12, 2014 by HC Leave a Comment

It’s difficult to think critically about a book like This Star Won’t Go Out, because it was clearly put together with lots of love by the grieving friends and family of a charming, precocious, and kind sixteen-year-old girl who died from complications with thyroid cancer. So instead I’ll try to give you an idea what it’s like. The book revolves around Ester Earl, who was about as lovely as any fictional book heroine you could imagine. She was funny, thoughtful, self-depricating, creative, kind, friendly, uncomplaining, […]
