The secrets that we keep

June 21, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

4.5 stars I can’t believe it’s been nearly a month since I read this book. Because of my massive backlog, I’m going to resort to my favourite short-cut, stealing the blurb from Goodreads: A murder…a tragic accident…or just parents behaving badly? What’s indisputable is that someone is dead. But who did what? Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:  Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and […]

This book almost turned me into a rabid frothmonster.

I’m not usually one for books about mommies and gossip and the plight of the suburban housewife, but I am highly susceptible to books everyone seems to love. So I gave in (like I always do). Actually, let’s not even play around and call it “giving in.” I’m a curious bastard. If you get me curious, I’m gonna follow through. And I’m so glad I was curious about this book, because I really ended up loving it. Here is where I would normally give you […]

Pass the Sun Tan Lotion

April 9, 2015 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

Thanks to the Cannonballers who raved about this book. After reading two rather serious pieces of nonfiction (death, death, and more death), this novel set in Australia was just the light but compelling read that I needed. Not that there isn’t some serious and grim stuff at the center of Big Little Lies, but there’s also a great deal of humor and heart. Moriarty pulls us into the lives of three mothers, whose children are all starting the same kindergarten class. There’s Madeline, the former […]

Like High School, all over again.

February 3, 2015 by scootsa1000 6 Comments

Like Julia Roberts at every single awards show, I’m gonna go ahead and make this review all about me. You see, I am a stay-at-home mom with three kids in elementary school. I am the room mother for the kindergarten class. I live in a suburb just outside of Washington DC that is equal parts hard-working folks who are doing ok and CRAZY MONEY PEOPLE. Lots of other moms at school come to volunteer dressed to the nines — in outfits straight off the runway, […]

Oh Just Read The Damn Book Already

January 9, 2015 by ModernLove 7 Comments

I didn’t want to like this book. I went into it planning how I was going to be apologetic in my review; I tried, but it just wasn’t my thing. I’d seen it pop up in my Amazon recs, on a few year end lists. I read the summary. I thought it was going to be “Mommy Lit,” those books about rich, white mommies who have problems with cheating husbands and thieving maids and out of control children. This just isn’t for me, I thought, buying the $3.99 […]

Just read this damn book

January 7, 2015 by Caitlin_D 4 Comments

Well, it took me a little longer to get through than badkittyuno took to get through (two days, not one evening) but Big Little Lies has set a high bar for my second Cannonballread. I had never heard of this book until my sister was returning it to our mutual friend on Sunday before stopping to ask if I wanted to shot at it first. I’m glad I said yes! At the start of the book there is a murder at a local Elementary school […]
