#CBR Bingo: #Cannonbookclub (Bingo #5)

November 17, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

#CBR10Bingo: #CannonBookclub I voted for this book in the most recent Book Club poll because Craig Ferguson’s autobiography is hugely enjoyable and one of the best ones I’ve read/listened to (I have the audiobook, narrated by Ferguson himself), and as a result, I was curious and excited at the chance to read a work of fiction by him. Unlike some who have already reviewed this book (by now quite a few, I’m yet again behind on my reviews), I didn’t really watch a lot of Ferguson’s stuff as a […]

Not-very good men do not very good things

November 3, 2018 by tillie 4 Comments

In Ferguson’s reading guide to this novel he mentions that he was heartbroken while writing this novel and this statement both surprised me and not surprised me. It starts out as a simple tale of two friends, an incident at a river and then drifting apart. Then there’s two Americans who start a religion and it seems destined that all the tales will intertwine. They do, but not in any satisfactory way. This is not a pleasant novel. It is filled with not-very good men […]

Book Club Discussion Post: Between the Bridge and the River

Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson

November 2, 2018 by faintingviolet 20 Comments

Our final #CannonBookClub of 2018 has arrived. Our second Anniversary Read, Between the Bridge and the River, has inspired a wide range of emotions and responses – admittedly most of them negative. Craig Ferguson was after something, and we’ve all had different takes on what he achieved and how he failed. Ground rules remain the same as they always have. For those of you who might be joining in for #CannonBookClub for the first time (hello new friends!) all are welcome. The topics are numbered and […]

Love the guy, hated the book.

OK, I’ll just say up front that if I had read Between the Bridge and the River when it came out in 2006, I’m pretty sure I would have loved it and written a rave review. Unfortunately reading it in 2018, I just didn’t have that reaction. I’ve always liked Craig Ferguson, and his sense of humour. He was my favourite part of “The Drew Carey Show,” and his most recent comedy special on Netflix, “Tickle Fight” made me laugh out loud. He’s a good guy, who’s been […]

CBR Bingo (5 and 6) Book Club/ Dear Lord I Have Failed!

November 1, 2018 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I’ve never written a review for a book I didn’t finish but Between the Bridge and the River is an integral part of Cannonball Bingo and I still managed to gather together some thoughts that I hope to contribute to this weekend’s Book Club. However I cannot justifiably add it to my end of year book count so hopefully saying I am reviewing “0” books with this review keeps it from raising my total. I knew Between the Bridge and the River was not going to be the book for me […]

Post your fave Craigy Ferg clips in the comments so we can have something nice to talk about instead :) #CBRBingo

I feel guilty about this book. I stumped for it pretty hard in the Book Club vote, based on how much I loved Craig Ferguson’s memoir, American on Purpose, and his stand up, and his stint on The Late Late Show. (American on Purpose is still the best celebrity memoir I’ve ever read, FYI.) But, I did not like reading this book. His signature wit and profanity, his cheeky observational skills, things that I love about him, were not put to a purpose here that I could […]
