A Romance with Real People

January 4, 2018 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

2017 was not a good year for romance. Pretty Face by Lucy Parker was by far the best, and while I read a bunch, I literally couldn’t tell you a single thing about most of them. And on top of that I had major issues with Pretty Face and the boss/subordinate romance. But then Hate to Want You was recommended by both Emmalita and Malin. And then it went on ebook sale. So here we are. Hate to want You is a second chance romance. […]

Can You Have PTSD Flashbacks to Grad School?

January 3, 2018 by Beth Ellen Leave a Comment

So I finished this audiobook a week ago, and even though I usually try to review immediately (hence my 6 months I hate the world review hiatus last year) I still need to confront this one. Hope Jahren is a biology research professor. This is both a memoir and a love story to plants and the world. It is read by the author. It is open and honest about so much, while at the same time glossing over so much more. She begins with where […]

Can You Friend-zone a Compassion Robot?

October 10, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

After a “s’alright” from Mrs. Julien and an “I agree with Mrs. J” from Beth Ellen, I set my expectations to middling for Penny Reid’s 6th entry in her Knitting in the City series. Penny Reid is an uneven writer who swings between very good and awful. She is still working her way off Double Secret probation. Dating-ish doesn’t move her in any particular direction. The romance is just ok, the ideas Reid is exploring are quite interesting. I frequently wanted to insert myself into the […]

A beautiful Marilyn biography

August 2, 2017 by Beth Ellen 3 Comments

Full disclosure I received this from fellow Cannonballer Xoxoxoe as she frickin’ wrote/drew this. How cool is that?! All thoughts and opinions though are my own, but I’ll start with this one is definitely staying on my bookshelf. There’s not much to plot here, it’s a biography of Marilyn Monroe. We start with Norma Jean and work our way through to the end of her too short life. I really enjoy history, and especially Hollywood history (the podcast You Must Remember This is amazing y’all […]

Who new books about FBI agents and attorneys could actually be fun?

June 14, 2017 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

So over the first of our two big adventures the fam and I packed up and flew across the country for vacation. When traveling with an under two we quickly realised that we had a lot of spare evening time on our hands in very quiet hotel rooms. Enter the first four books of a series that I’ve already read the more recent ones. Something About You Cameron is an assistant US Attorney taking a much needed weekend away at a fancy hotel while her […]

Assassination Vacation (literally! I listened to this on vacation)

June 8, 2017 by Beth Ellen 2 Comments

So I took 2 months off of reviewing. The BE clan decided to travel all over the country and world so there was hardly any time to update my reading spreadsheet, let alone write a review. But we’re back and finally all healthy so moments of free time are now available! Welcome to catch-up. And let’s start with an adorable history book about presidential assassinations! In Sarah Vowell’s vein of quirky, off kilter history books this one talks about the assassinations of Presidents Lincoln, Garfield, […]
