Yer a wizard, Peter…but not that kind

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch

February 8, 2020 by Bothari43 1 Comment

The plot on this one sounds pretty unoriginal – rookie London cop sees ghosts – but it ended up taking a few unexpected turns. Peter Grant is a rookie, just about to be assigned to the most boring and paperwork-heavy department, when a ghost tells him he witnessed a murder. Peter checks into the ghost’s story (very open-minded of him, I thought) and finds out that maybe he’s not going crazy. Then he gets assigned to the mysterious Detective Nightingale, and learns all sorts of […]

Urban Fantasy in London – Yay!

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch

August 25, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

I think I saw this series mentioned a while back on Cannonball Read and added it to my wish list but didn’t download it until my last trip to London.  I quite enjoy urban fantasy series but most of them tend to start with the hero already involved in the magical world, even if they have no idea how little they know.  Of course, then there are the other stories about magic and the supernatural, where a person who had no previous knowledge of them, […]

New guy, same weird problems

The October Man by Ben Aaronovitch

June 28, 2019 by kittenkong42 Leave a Comment

Ben Aaronovitch takes a detour from London in his latest urban fantasy novella, but doesn’t really go too far afield. In The October Man we take a break from the adventures of Peter Grant in London to see what is happening elsewhere in the world of magical policing. We arrive in Germany to enjoy an adventure with Peter’s counterpart Tobias (Tobi) Winter, another young copper who turned out to have a bit of a gift with magic. Tobi is assigned to work a case in […]

Wonderful Look at Magic in Germany

The October Man by Ben Aaronovitch

March 8, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Please note that I received this via NetGalley. This did not affect my reviews or rating. This book will be released on March 31, 2019.  So this was pretty cool. Instead of following Peter or Nightingale (why???) we follow another magic practitioner named Tobias Winter. Tobias is the equivalent to our Peter Grant in England, only Tobias operates in Germany. Tobias is working on a case that seems to involve wine, ghosts, and magic. Tobias’s family seemed very interesting and I wanted to know more […]

Peter’s Adventure Continues

Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch

February 17, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

So this was okay, I just thought that parts of the book didn’t land. Lesley has always seemed jealous and angry to me and I am honestly sick of the whole thing with her and The Faceless Man. Parts of the book dragged though to me. When Peter is captured (I swear this happened in another book) you just want the story to get moving because you are tired of him being shown as being a moron when it comes to Lesley. Maybe I am […]

A Nice Peek at Peter & Nightingale

The Furthest Station by Ben Aaronovitch

February 17, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Well this was a nice look into Peter and Nightingale that for once did not involve The Faceless Man or Lesley. There is still something hovering over this book though that makes me think they may be trying to turn or did turn another character to their side and that’s getting a bit old to me. We do have Bev appearing in this one, but not center stage. We actually have Peter investigating mostly and worrying about his cousin Abigail who keeps pushing to learn […]
