An author I’m glad I gave a third try to read

The Night is for Darkness by Jonathan Stutzman

January 7, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Night is for Darkness. That is the title of this book. It is by Jonathan Stutzman. And the most surprising thing about this book is, I liked it. You might have heard me (um… read my reviews) in the past saying that Stutzman and I probably would not be reading friends. But this time we were! Which just goes to show you that sometimes, even an author you do not always care for, can write something pretty darn good. This time we start our […]

Tiger vs. Nightmare  by Emily Tetri

August 11, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Awhile ago, Tiger vs. Nightmare was on several reading and award lists. I was interested, but even though it looked short, I just never found the right moment to start reading. However, a few weeks ago, while I was browsing the website of my local library, I found that they had a copy of Emily Tetri’s book. I requested some curbside pickup service (along with other books) and find myself reading the other night. What I found was a single themed story about what a nightmare […]

I’m not sleepy….

The Yawns Are Coming! by Christopher Eliopoulos

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Who has not had a yawn sneak up on them? Then another? And another? The two kids in this story have just that happen in The Yawns Are Coming! by Christopher Eliopoulos. Yawns is a cute story about two best friends wanting to play all night long at a sleepover, but how the Yawns (and their friends) have other plans. While the kids bravely fight the Yawns, they are no match! The funny antics of these two best friends (and the Yawns and their friends) […]

Goodnight, Veggies by Diana Murray

March 10, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Goodnight, Veggies is one of those books where I read it and think, “Huh. Did I like this story?”  Then I look again and think, “Do I like the art?” I then realize that there is a worm wearing a hat and a single boot, but nothing else. This is creepy number one when it comes to dressing animals in a story. Please do not dress the worm, Zachariah Ohora.   However, despite this wardrobe malfunction, Diana Murray has text that helps counter this issue. […]

Five Fuzzy Chicks by Diana Murray

March 10, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Finding the right book at the right time is rarely easy, but it is fun. I was cleaning up some reader copies that got out of place and picked up Five Fuzzy Chicks.  Now, it had been a long month all week, I needed something to counter that and what I found was Diana Murray and Sydney Hanson’s picture book. This is a cute rhyming story that is perfect for a bedtime (or anytime). It follows five little chicks who are not ready for bed. […]

Wide-awake and definitely NOT tired!

No More Naps!: A Story for When You're Wide-Awake and Definitely Not Tired by Chris Grabenstein

February 11, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Annalise Devin McFleece is Definitely Not Tired! Nope. Not her. She is a typical kid who cries, fights and will not, no matter what, go take her nap. A fate more than one parent has encountered I am sure. And Miss Annalise’s partents are suffering through that in No More Naps!: A Story for When You’re Wide-Awake and Definitely Not Tired. The McFleece family is your typical modern family: Mom, Dad and one cranky toddler named Annalise Devin. Her cries and screams can crumble the […]
