“Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end.”

Becoming by Michelle Obama

This was a pick for my IRL book club in the spring, and I’m so glad! I don’t know if I ever would have picked it up otherwise, due to my avoidance of both political books and memoirs, unless they come suuuper highly recommended. (Sidenote: I love my IRL book club. It’s like having a bimonthly Galentine’s Day.) Mostly, Michelle Obama is such a good writer! She is t a l e n t e d. Her book also fits into my memoir sweet spot, […]

“Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?”

Becoming by Michelle Obama

April 20, 2019 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

I am probably the last person to review Michelle Obama’s near perfect memoir, Becoming, but being late to the party is better than missing it entirely. I achingly miss the Obamas and spending this time with Michelle was something of a salve. I took longer than I needed to to read this one because I didn’t want it to end. Michelle Robinson had a happy childhood in Chicago. She adored her older brother, Craig, and is still very close to him. She learned a lot from […]

There are a lot of reasons…

Becoming by Michelle Obama

…To love Michelle Obama. In Becoming, Mrs. Obama tells the story of her childhood and her life up to the point at which we now know her. Many of the basic facts and anecdotes in the book have been well documented through the years and the ever-present fact of her husband lends a deceptive familiarity to the book. Mrs. Obama’s voice also shines through and whether it’s because she has told many of the stories or because she is such a distinctive person, I imagined […]

Becoming – Be my friiiiiiiend, Michelle

Becoming by Michelle Obama

March 15, 2019 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Let me just put this shocker out there: I voted for Obama. Big fan. However, I am not the most politically involved so I wasn’t tuned in to all the goings on of his administration, and also, would not say I had a strong opinion of Michelle Obama. I found her to be a classy lady, and envy her super toned arms, but by and large wasn’t focused on her at all during her eight years in the White House. Her book has been heralded […]

Becoming is Inspirational

Becoming by Michelle Obama

January 30, 2019 by Classic 2 Comments

I apologize in advance if this seems a little incoherent. What a great memoir! Michelle Obama hits everything that I love in memoirs. She goes into her childhood, her family, how her parents and family shaped her. And then you get to read about how certain incidents throughout her life defined her. I laughed, cried, grieved, and got angry reading about all of the highs and lows in her life. And I ended up smiling when we get to the epilogue and know that she […]

“Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?”

Becoming by Michelle Obama

January 26, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

During the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency, it became clear to me that Michelle Obama was a statuesque and beautiful woman, who was also clearly intelligent, caring and wanting to make a difference alongside her husband. Being part of the first African American Presidential couple in the White House and basically raising her young daughters more or less in the public eye cannot have been easy. Nevertheless, I didn’t know all that much about Michelle Obama, which was why this autobiography was so interesting […]
