A World You Want To Wear Like a Blanket

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers

May 29, 2024 by RouletteGirl 2 Comments

Becky Chambers’ first Monk & Robot book, A Psalm for the Wild-Built, struck a chord in me in a way that few other books have. Chambers built a world so beautiful, so full of hope, that I just wanted to curl up in it like a blanket. She continues that glorious world-building in the second book, A Prayer for the Crown-Shy. Picking up right after book 1, we join Sibling Dex and Mosscap as they re-enter human territory and plan to introduce Mosscap to the […]

I love Becky Chambers!

(Monk and Robot #1) A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

(Monk and Robot #2) A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers

(Wayfarers #1) The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

The theme of these three books is loosely that they were written by Becky Chambers, who as I stated above I love! I read “To Be Taught if Fortunate” at least twice, and I’d totally read it again. The other theme of these three books though, is different (for me) pronouns. I find it hard to believe (but I think it’s true) that these are the first books I’ve read with either trans or non-binary characters. I’m socially liberal and I believe in rights for […]

The Journey is the Point

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

Apparently you either love Becky Chambers’ style of writing or you hate it. I am firmly on the side of loving a feel-good sci-fi novel, and here are my favorite things about The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet: 1. The world-building. I love how each chapter you learn more about the galaxy, how the Galactic Commons works, the histories of the different alien species. The news blasts at the start of some chapters are a fun way to learn more about what is […]

I’m on a Reading Roll – Which Makes It Hard to Keep Up With Reviews

A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers

A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

A Psalm for the Wild-Built and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers I think I only have one Becky Chambers book left to read, and then I’ll have to wait for her to come back from the hiatus she’s currently on. I enjoyed both of the Monk and Robot books, though for some reason they don’t seem to be quite sticking with me the way the Wayfarers books did. Both novellas follow monk Dex and robot Mosscap and are mostly about their relationship […]

Snapshots of a Spaceborn Few

Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers

October 2, 2023 by Tracy Leave a Comment

This one is slower than the first two novels in the Wayfarers series. We spend most of the book on the Asteria, one of the ships in the Exodan Fleet, following the characters of Tessa, a (often single) mother of two; Isabel, an Archivist; Eyas, a Caretaker (of the dead); Kip, a teen who just wants to leave the Fleet; and Sawyer, who wasn’t born in the Fleet but is looking for a different way of life. The timeframe for the novel is primarily set […]

Interspecies Connections as the “Wayfarers” Series Wraps Up

The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers

October 2, 2023 by Tracy Leave a Comment

Like the other Wayfarers novels, The Galaxy, and the Ground Within is essentially a standalone novel, though readers of the other novels in the series will recognize the character Pei. She is one of the main characters this time, along with Roveg, a Quelin; Speaker, an Akarak; and Ouloo and her child Tupo, both Laru. The setting is the planet Gora, which is the Hanto word for “useless,” which I think made me laugh out loud upon reading that. It’s a planet that people stop […]
