Wait a minute…nice boys don’t kiss like that.

SO let’s just start this by saying I’m an asshole who used to judge Romance. Not romance, like flowers and candy (except don’t ever buy me either, please) but Romance with a capital R. The Romance with the swooning damsels and charming rakes and heaving bosoms and covers like this:  I judged the shit out of it. Starting when I was a kid and I first noticed my mom’s drugstore paperback Harlequin novels lying around. UGH I would exclaim WHY DON’T YOU JUST READ A […]

There’s a formula to it. A very simple formula! EVERYBODY’S A SUSPECT!

I have a confession to make. Though I don’t know if confession is the right word. Confession hints at something one has been hiding for fear of punishment. Or SHAME. And this is nothing to be ashamed of. When I was younger, I read 100 million RL Stine books. I started with Goosebumps and then quickly moved on to Fear Street. I then graduated to Christopher Pike, and started dabbling in Stephen King at WAY WAY too young of an age. I loved RL Stine […]

Magic’s all balderdash and chicanery. I’m afraid we don’t know a bloody thing. Except I seem to be British, don’t I?

I picked this up because A) I wanted to read something fun and B) it turned up on a list of urban fantasy novels when I Googled it and C) when I looked it up on Goodreads, Malin had given it a good review. I’d read and enjoyed a few of the Kate Daniels series, so it was no surprise that this book was great fun, as well. There’s just something really great about throwing magic and werewolves and vampires and beings from other planets […]

Joey had reasons. They were threefold.

Fantasy Romance is quickly becoming one of my favorite genres. Here’s why: You get to live in an entirely made up world for a while, full of fairies, magic, animals who can communicate with humans, AND DID I MENTION MAGIC. Sometimes you want the people in those stories to make out and give you swoony feelings. That’s it. Those are my reasons. They are simple, yes (not even threefold!) but feelings don’t have to be complicated all the time. Anyway, The Sea King is the […]

“We all change, when you think about it, we’re all different people, all through our lives, and that’s okay, that’s good, you’ve gotta keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be.”

I feel like a bit of a cheat starting with a review of this book, because I actually finished it on December 31st. I always struggle with whether to start with the first book I actually READ in the new year, or if it’s OK to use my first review on a book I read the previous year. It feels a bit wrong, even though I only finished it about half an hour before 2018, but I’m doing it anyway. There. Now that you’ve witnessed […]

Where you lead, I will follow

October 16, 2017 by baxlala 7 Comments

I don’t know how I missed reading Wild when it came out five years ago. I certainly remember it coming out, and was aware of its popularity, particularly once it became a Reese Witherspoon vehicle. I saw the movie and enjoyed it, but it wasn’t until moving to the PNW that I felt the inclination to pick it up. This is my first Cannonball review of the year and, it being October now, I’ve given up on the possibility of reaching a full Cannonball. But […]
