So Many Batmans

August 27, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

I don’t know much about Batman Beyond other than the fact that the big brother from Boy Meets World did the voice for Batman in the cartoon. That is pretty cool and enough to pique my interest. It turns out the YA section of my local library has a ton of DC trade paperbacks, and I found this bad boy there so I gave it a go. In the Batman Beyond world (which has a Gotham meets cyberpunk aesthetic), Bruce Wayne is an old man […]

The Darkness that Serves the Light

July 14, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

This review includes minor spoilers of a twenty year old zeitgeisty comic that you probably already know about. On its face, Batman: Knightfall is the novelization of the (in)famous storyline in which the Caped Crusader suffers a broken back at the knee of the villain Bane and must temporarily cede the batsuit to another. Moviegoers will recognize the major plot points from the final movie in the Nolan Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Comic nerds will be familiar with the storyline for its supremely awesome […]

The Best of the Dini/Timm Batverse

July 3, 2017 by Halbs 2 Comments

Growing up, Batman was my guy thanks to Batman: The Animated Series. I loved the look and the mood of the show. Two guys largely responsible for that landmark show are writer Paul Dini and illustrator Bruce Timm. The third member of that B:TAS trinity is voice director Andrea Romano, who gave us our definitive Batman – Kevin Conroy. The success of the animated show translated well back into comics, many of which have been collected and reviewed by me in The Batman Adventures.  Dini […]

Introducing Joker(TM) Hot Topic

June 30, 2017 by Lipton 1 Comment

“Something, something Joker doesn’t have a face, something something Batman is so Edgy and Dark, something, something it’ll be AWESOME!” –Creative notes scrawled on a crumpled napkin by a DC exec during a coked-out party.

Somebody give Glen Weldon a high-five.

June 21, 2017 by narfna 7 Comments

The best thing about The Caped Crusade, Glen Weldon’s book-length ode to Batmania, is Glen Weldon himself. Sure, the actual book is informative and well thought out, organized and insightful. But it’s also got a personality to it, thanks to Weldon, who impregnates even the most mundane sentence with his dry wit and his enthusiasm for his two subjects (Batman, the nature of nerdery). His twin theses? Nerdery isn’t about what you love, but loving what you love with a staggering, vacuum-sucking passion. And that […]

The Best Version of Batman

April 1, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

If you are of a certain age, your favorite version of Batman is Batman: The Animated Series Batman. Kevin Conroy’s voice is your platonic idea of what The Batman sounds like. I was eight years old when that cartoon debuted on Fox, and I still get goosebumps when I watch the opening credits. The show perfectly harmonized the darkness, the fun, the quiet mystery, and the hardboiled noir that makes Batman great. There’s more to Batman than the campy 1960s show, and Batman is a better person than […]
