Never meet your heroes

My Buddy, Killer Croc by Sara Farizan

September 20, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The focus of having the character of Killer Croc (Waylon Jones) as the “hero” in the Sara Farizan and Nicoletta Baldari graphic novel, My Buddy, Killer Croc, is a familiar but good twist. However, the one thing I was wondering is if the reader will understand that Killer Croc, no matter how “good or nice” he seems, is not a “good guy” due to how he is mostly good to the main character (or seems to be on the surface). There is an interesting nod to […]

“Batgirl, Batgirl! Batgirl, Batgirl! Where do you come from, where do you go? What is your scene, baby, we just gotta know”

Batgirls Volume 2: Bat Girl Summer by Becky Cloonan

July 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The crew: by Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, Neil Googe (Artist), Robbi Rodriguez (Artist), Scott Godlewski (Inker), Wayne Faucher (Inker), Rico Renzi (Colorist), Becca Carey (Letterer) I have a habit of finding book or volume two in a series. This time I found Batgirls Volume 2: Bat Girl Summer. In my defense, I did not see volume two on it anyplace, just Bat Girl. And Batgirl on the cover. I was looking for something different from my usual graphic novels and while it is not high […]

October 2022 Leftovers

Batman: The Impostor by Mattson Tomlin

The Son by Jo Nesbø

Killer Come Back to Me: The Crime Stories of Ray Bradbury by Ray Bradbury

The Devil's Wedding Ring by Vidar Sundstøl

November 1, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Happy belated Halloween to all who observe! Again, I don’t have as many leftovers as I did in recent months since I’m logging so many full reviews for the Book Bingo. But here’s what I got, all of them quality 4-star reads…   Batman: The Impostor Really enjoyed this one. A fresh take, helped by the fact that Batman is surrounded by characters with no history. Jim Gordon is off the force. Alfred has forsaken him (or vice versa). No Joker, no Riddler, Penguin functions […]

September 2022 Leftovers

Batman '89 by Sam Hamm

The Boys' Club by Erica Katz

The Banker's Wife by Christina Alger

October 1, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Not nearly as many leftovers as in the last few months, mostly because of the Ted Williams biography, also because of other stuff going on. Plus, I’m writing longer posts for books I would have otherwise dispensed with sooner because of CBR 14 Bingo. Batman ’89*** Been waiting for this for so long, especially after the love Batman 66got, but the results were mixed. Loved what they did with Robin. Didn’t like what they did with Harvey Dent/Two-Face. It felt like Christopher Nolan and not […]

One Bad Day

Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland

October 1, 2022 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr14bingo Scandal/bingo  Published in 1988 generated controversy for its violence, treatment of Barbara Gordon, Moore’s later criticism of his own. See this story in the Guardian. Batman: The Killing Joke, published in 1988, has had enormous influence on Batman movies and seems to be the generally accepted version of the Joker’s origin story. While I haven’t seen all of the Batman movies, as I read this graphic novel, I recognized that Hollywood has largely adopted Alan Moore’s story as canon. Moore himself in subsequent years […]

Na Na Na (Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na) ROBIN!

Batman and Robin and Howard by Jeffrey Brown

September 28, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

One reviewer from Goodreads said Batman and Robin and Howard was (to be more polite) less than intelligent, and while I will not disagree, I think they missed the point. This is an over the top, fun, story about being the new kid vs. the before kid at school. The story of two people who do not click and make assumptions about each other. It is a goofy way to help kids try and see both sides of the cape. While the adult doofus Batman […]
