Bad-a$$ gals

The Girl Who Changed Little League: The True Story of Maria Pepe and Her Battle to Play Ball. by Maria Pepe with Jean L. S. Patrick

Sparrow Loves Reptiles by Murry Burgess and Tamisha Anthony

November 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Girls are bad-a$$ in ways they might not know. And Maria Pepe did not really know it, she just knew she wanted to play Little League. But the powers that be said girls can’t play. Yet, Maria was not going to let herself be stopped. And Pepe with Jean L. S. Patrick showed how this could be done in The Girl Who Changed Little League: The True Story of Maria Pepe and Her Battle to Play Ball. The story is simple: Girl loves baseball. Girl […]

Joe Buck LOVES Christina Applegate

Lucky Bastard: My Life, My Dad, and the Things I'm Not Allowed to Say on TV by Joe Buck

July 24, 2025 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A lot of people on the internet hate Joe Buck. I’m not one of those people.  Because I grew up in Texas, I am a big Troy Aikman fan.  I like Joe Buck by association. Plus, unless a sports broadcaster never stops talking, I usually have a favorable opinion of them. Ergo, I picked up this audiobook. I was looking for a light, fun listen for my work drives. Lucky Bastard delivered. Joe Buck was born in 1969 to beloved St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck […]

Teamwork is Dreamwork

Tryouts: (A Graphic Novel) (The Brinkley Yearbooks) by Sarah Sax

January 2, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I didn’t write up my review for Tryouts: (A Graphic Novel) (The Brinkley Yearbooks) by Sarah Sax until after things closed for the year. But that’s okay. I will just add it as my fourth book review of 2025 as I had a few books at the end of 2024 I missed, but will let you know about them now January 2025. And the rest of the books afterwards should be 2025 all the way. Tryouts is a typical story of girl power, sports, teamwork […]

Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball by Keith O'Brien

September 20, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as Part of CBR16 Bingo: games. Pete Rose is a former baseball player and this is a book based on his life. As I said last year in my review from Eight Men Out, I’ve always had mixed feelings on Pete Rose. Along with the Black Sox, he’s the one most famously banned from baseball due to a sort of gambling scandal. The rampant denialism got under my skin and I’ve just never liked the guy. I’ve softened a little, not because Rose has […]

Tossed a curveball

Curveball  by Pablo Cartaya

September 13, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

We know the story of Curveball it is a  “It is more fun to play the game than to be played by the game.” But Pablo Cartaya has a few curveballs tossed in as well. We follow a young girl who loves competition and sports, especially baseball. Or does she? Or is her mother trying to live vicariously through her, pushing her to be the best as she couldn’t be? And to keep the family tradition alive so that she can have the opportunities her mother […]

The Last of His Kind: Clayton Kershaw and the Burden of Greatness by Andy McCullough

May 17, 2024 by Jake Leave a Comment

The fascinating thing about this book is how I was more interested in Clayton Kershaw’s story than the man himself. I suppose both are intertwined. But I think Kershaw has a fascinating story, rising from the challenges of his youth to becoming the consensus best pitcher of his generation. The man himself? Eh. Stays private, sometimes shows a funny side, family man, Christian of the Baptist/Evangelical/non-liturgical variety. Seems like a decent guy, certainly not an intriguing one. Andy McCullough seems to know this without saying […]
