Can’t decide what kind of book it wants to be

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal

December 5, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

This book was everywhere for awhile, so I’m late to the party but at least I made it! I am a sucker for Indian diaspora books (and books about India in general)- I couldn’t get enough post-colonial lit in college and it left me with an enduring affection for female Indian authors (The God of Small Things still looms large in my foundational reads). Which is to say: I was excited to read this before I had any idea what it was about. The plot […]

Age, Gender and Culture in one London Community

August 8, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: Dream Vacation I honestly am not sure what I was expecting from this one but between Reese Witherspoon and positive Cannonball reviews, I knew I wanted to read it.  It had a darker underside than I realized while also focusing on all the themes I was expecting from the story, such as relationships, gender, cultural and generational divides, and different approaches to life as an immigrant. Nikki is the youngest daughter in an English Punjabi family.  Already being English speakers when they emigrated, […]

You’ll Never Think about Eggplant the Same Way Again

July 14, 2018 by Jenny S 2 Comments

Reading this just after finishing Honour caused a bit of whiplash.  Balli Kaur Jaswal deals with similar themes of immigration, religious and cultural traditions, and gender roles, but the feel of this story is earthier and more empowering.  It’s hard not to love a novel that explores the smoldering sexuality lurking inside every woman—no matter their age or life situation. As the daughter of immigrants, Nikki feels even more cross-cultural pressure between her British and Indian identities when she drops out of university, where she […]

You’ll never think of vegetables the same way again.

Who among us would ever have thought that Reese Witherspoon would end up being one of the most supportive voices in the world of women authors? It turns out that now I’ve read three of her picks, and ended up really impressed with two of them. Well done, Reese. Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows was her pick for March, and it really wasn’t on my radar until leedock reviewed it last week, but after reading that, I went out and got it the same day. […]

A quick prayer in gratitude of pleasure.

June 11, 2018 by Leedock 2 Comments

This one hit my radar when it was put up for vote in my book club. It didn’t make the cut, but when I saw it at the library I snagged it and I’m glad that I did. This is one of the Reese Witherspoon books and the third that I have unwittingly read this year. I knew that she was behind bringing some women centered  books to screen,  but honestly had no idea that she had a book club going. I am surprised that […]

An excellent book club book

April 2, 2018 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

I can totally buy Reese Witherspoon reading, liking, and recommending this book. It’s a mental image I have no problem with. And a book I have no problem with. I feel like it’s a book you’re about to see everywhere. Admittedly, I’m a bit of a prude and never directly search for the title – I search for the author, or Reese Witherspoon Book Club, or something of the sort. But that’s me. Anyway, a friend saw this on the RWBC list and suggested it […]
