The Tale of Louis Zamperini

October 7, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I knew about 10% of this story going into it, mostly due to the publicity surrounding the movie adaptation, so a lot of it really surprised me. It’s truly an incredible story, and the writing and research by Laura Hillenbrand fleshes it out wonderfully. “Dignity is as essential to human life as water, food, and oxygen. The stubborn retention of it, even in the face of extreme physical hardship, can hold a man’s soul in his body long past the point at which the body should have […]

Jojo! Noooo!

October 2, 2015 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

Oh, I did not like this! I feel like one of my new favorite authors just shit all over two couples that I spent an entire 600 page novel falling in love with. Bad Jojo! No no! Jojo Moyes released Honeymoon in Paris as a prequel to The Girl You Left Behind — intending people to read the prequel before the novel’s official release. I did it the opposite way — I loved The Girl You Left Behind, so when I discovered a prequel based on the first few months of […]

A royal romance

October 2, 2015 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Ok, I admit I did not have super high expectations for this one. I love the Fug Girls — their blog, which I’ve been reading for a freaking decade, cracks me up — but I found Spoiled and Messy (their two other YA novels) to be fun, but vapid (and in the case of Messy, occasionally annoying). The Royal We seems aimed at a more adult audience, and while it has its faults, I also think it’s probably the best book these two ladies have produced so far. “Well. You never have to […]

Yay for more Petra!

While I admit that I’m tiring slightly of the Enderverse audiobooks, which I’ve been listening to nonstop for the last couple of months in an attempt to visit stories that I haven’t read in years, as well as fill in any gaps where I’ve missed a book release (god this sentence is long), I must say that Shadow Puppets is one of the best novels in the series, and one that I remembered quite well, despite not having read it in at least seven or eight […]

Yes, you!

On the complete opposite side of the spectrum from goth girl writes about working in a funeral home, we have the delightful Mindy Kaling, back again with more tales of awkwardness and woe. I don’t think I liked this one quite as much as her first, but I still found it a lot of fun. “Work hard, know your shit, show your shit, and then feel entitled. Listen to no one except the two smartest and kindest adults you know, and that doesn’t always mean your […]

Tales from the mortuary

September 29, 2015 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

The library recommended Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory after I finished Brain on Fire, but it really reminded me more of Judy Melinek’s wonderful Working Stiff. Three fascinating books written by three talented women. Caitlin Doughty’s gets a little preachy towards the end, as she dives into her own personal philosophies on death and dying, but the information leading up to her own discoveries is interesting and delivered wonderfully. “Accepting death doesn’t mean you won’t be devastated when someone you love dies. […]
