My dad and I love good-bad movies — especially when shit blows up. We went and saw I, Frankenstein in theaters. We routinely rewatch Deep Impact — we particularly enjoy when Tea Leoni gets wiped out by the wave. The cheesier, the better. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter the movie was pretty much made for us. Unfortunately, its source material was just bad. It’s an interesting concept — the author claims to have been given journals written by Abraham Lincoln. These detail not only his life prior to and during his […]
“All these lives,” she said. “All the stories we never know.”
This book apparently won a ton of awards, and people online rave about Olive. I actually thought she was kind of a dick, and the book would have been much better without her. “But here they were, and Olive pictured two slices of Swiss cheese pressed together, such holes they brought to this union—what pieces life took out of you. Her eyes were closed, and throughout her tired self swept waves of gratitude—and regret. She pictured the sunny room, the sun-washed wall, the bayberry outside. It […]
Interesting material about a couple of real assholes
Masters of Sex has two main components: the research that Masters & Johnson performed over decades as “sex experts”, and biographical material on the researchers themselves. Most of the research I found fascinating, particularly in how very controversial it was at the time. But the biographical material, while presumably accurate, portrayed Masters & Johnson as a couple of really unpleasant people that I quickly tired of. Dr. William Masters — an OBGYN determined to make a name for himself — and Virginia Johnson — a secretary […]
The Heart of Whiteness
Not a bad read, but definitely not worth the time it took to finish. It either needed to be more interesting, or quite a bit shorter… Okay, so to be totally honest, I read this book like two weeks ago and forgot about it and just now realized I never reviewed it. So…there’s your recommendation, basically. But here’s a bit more detail. Goodreads summary: Lemaster Carlyle, the president of the country’s most prestigious university, and his wife, Julie, the divinity school’s deputy dean, are America’s most prominent […]
Loved everything except the title — name it for Harper!
This book exhausted me — I couldn’t wait to find out how it ended, but I got so attached to the characters and so many (SO MANY) bad things kept happening that I had to keep giving myself little emotional breaks. Watch a cat video or two. And then I’d dive back in. “Death and ruin is man’s preferred ecosystem. Did you ever read about the bacterium that thrives in volcanoes, right on the edge of boiling rock? That’s us. Humanity is a germ that thrives on […]
“I was waiting for someone that would sweep me off my feet and would be swept up by me in equal parts.”
I’ve read several books by Taylor Jenkins Reid this year. I’ve found that while they tend to be a far cry from groundbreaking, she can be relied upon to create decent characters (who usually have bad-ass best friends — Reid writes great sidekicks and I loved the BFF in this one) and stories that are enjoyable, if not memorable. “This apartment is acting like nothing has changed. Everything has changed. I tell the walls he’s gone.” Forever, Interrupted starts when newlywed Elsie Porter Ross loses her […]
