I apparently started this draft on 11/21 — time to catch up! (4 stars) Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results by Josh Gondelman I can’t figure out where I heard about this book — I thought it was on CBR but I can’t find any reviews. Anyway, I’d never heard of Josh Gondelman before picking up this book, but he turns out he’s damn funny. He used to write for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and also created the SeinfeldToday Twitter […]

How to Walk Away by Katherine Center

November 21, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

It may be because I just finished 5 books about serial killers, but I really enjoyed this lovely story about a woman who overcomes a tragedy and falls in love again. It was sweet without being too sweet and I really enjoyed watching the two main characters interact. It made for an excellent palate cleanser. “When you don’t know what to do for yourself, do something for somebody else.” Margaret Jacobsen ignores ALL of her instincts, and gets into a plane flown by her unqualified […]

I have read like, a LOT of serial killer fiction lately. I’m probably on a list somewhere now

Looking Glass (The Naturalist #2) by Andrew Mayne

Murder Theory (The Naturalist #3) by Andrew Mayne

Dark Pattern (The Naturalist #4) by Andrew Mayne

The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy The Shocking Inside Story by Ann Rule

I enjoyed the hell out of this series — I downloaded the first one because Audible had it on some kind of special, and I ended up listening to all 4 books in less than three weeks. They reminded me a lot of Lincoln and Child’s Pendergast series — I loved these books about FBI agent Aloysius Pendergast when I was a teenager, and I have the sudden desire to reread them now that I’ve finished this series (book 4 does end of a cliffhanger, […]

Fiction Round Up

You Can Thank Me Later by Kelly Harms

The Book of Essie by Meghan MacLean Weir

The Dreamers by Karen Thompson Walker

The Wedding Party (The Wedding Date #3) by Jasmine Guillory

November 13, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(4 stars) You Can Thank Me Later: A Novella by Kelly Harms I’ve found the Audible originals to be hit or miss (Scalzi’s The Dispatcher was probably the only other one I really liked) but they’re free and I like Kelly Harms, so I gave this one a shot. It was pretty good — sort of sappy, sort of cheesy, lots of good descriptions of food. So basically, like a Hallmark movie in an audiobook — which I do not intend to be an insult. […]

Things We Didn't Talk About When I Was a Girl: A Memoir by Jeannie Vanasco

A Wild and Precious Life: A Memoir by Edie Windsor, Joshua Lyon

Ordinary Girls by Jaquira Díaz

(5 stars) A Wild and Precious Life: A Memoir by Edie Windsor, Joshua Lyon I LOVED this book. LOVED it. It’s funny and smart and made me cry sad tears AND happy tears. If you know nothing about Edie Windsor, you probably at least know this: she brought the case United States v. Windsor to the Supreme Court in 2013, defeating section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act. Stories about Windsor and her wife Thea were everywhere — they had been together for 40 years, […]

Record of a Spaceborn Few (Wayfarers #3) by Becky Chambers

November 5, 2019 by badkittyuno 1 Comment

“From the ground, we stand. From our ships, we live. By the stars, we hope.” Becky Chambers’s writing just resonates with me. It’s something about how incredibly realistic her characters are, set against an absolutely fantastic background. She write these stories about people living on a spaceship with incredible detail, down to how they grow food, and dispose of their dead, and handle cultural clashes with actual aliens, yet they act like people you’ve known your entire lives. Her books are inclusive and expansive and […]
