I listened to this one as an audiobook, narrated by Jim Broadbent. I highly recommend the audio version — besides the fact that it’s so easy to picture Harold as Jim Broadbent in the Bridget Jones movies (seriously!), it’s also a great book to let slowly unfold while doing a bit of walking yourself. “If I just keep putting one foot in front of the other, it stands to reason that I’m going to get there. I’ve begun to think we sit far more than we’re […]
Bear won’t let a few broken vertebrae stop him!
I love reading books about people living really, really adventurous/dangerous lives — especially mountain climbers. Mountain climbing fascinates me, because it seems like something I could possibly do (hey, I lift weights, I run, I hike — how hard could it be?) until I read peoples’ accounts and realize 1) it’s really cold up there and 2) no way in hell could I do that because I am a total weenie. I also love Bear Grylls, despite (as my husband continually reminded me while I read this book) the […]
But somebody has to do it
I’ve read quite a few Christopher Moore books, but my favorite has to be Practical Demonkeeping, which I first read — no joke — probably 20 years ago. A Dirty Job was pretty good, but mostly made me want to reread Practical Demonkeeping, which apparently has sequels that I’ve never heard of and must get my hands on now! If you’re familiar with Christopher Moore, then the plot of this one won’t surprise you: our protagonist, Beta Male Charlie, accidentally becomes a master of death after witnessing another one take […]
“These are the kinds of thoughts that made it necessary to separate me from the other kids at school.”
Reading a book by George Carlin is basically just like watching him perform live. Actually, it’s also really similar to having a conversation with my Uncle Jeff, but most of y’all don’t know him so we’ll go with the first comparison. It’s rapid-fire jokes, littered with swear words and politically incorrect observations. Some of the jokes will make you snort, some will make you roll your eyes, but by the end…you’ve had a good time. Napalm & Silly Putty includes such observations as… “Did you ever […]
“Sometimes, happiness feels so fragile…So what do we do about it?…Live. Forget that it’s fragile. Live like it isn’t”
You know how sometimes you’ll read a book and think, “This seems like it would be a really great movie one day?” The impression I kept getting from reading Marisa de los Santos’s Belong to Me, is that it would make a really good television series. Her characters are so incredibly well fleshed out and just seemed like such real people. And while there is plot to keep things moving, I really just wanted to spend more time with the characters. It would make for a great […]
The adjacent possible
I found this book, six chapters about six different inventions or discoveries that changed the world in massive ways, to be utterly fascinating. I did, however, also enjoy a 400 page book about salt, so I understand that your mileage may vary. Then again, y’all are a bunch of nerds like me so you should probably go ahead and read this one. Steven Johnson, who also wrote a really cool book about cholera, examines six innovations that had worldwide implications. Each chapter starts with a […]
