An excellent book to read for Women’s History Month

March 13, 2017 by badkittyuno 3 Comments

Another non-fiction book recommend by Overdrive for Women’s History Month — and one I would recommend as well! I think most people know that while McDonald’s was created as a roadside burger stand by two brothers named McDonald, that a man named Ray Kroc really turned it into the massive power that it remains today. This book tells the story of the McDonald brothers, and how Kroc sort of (okay, totally) bullied his way into their lives and business. It also tells the story of his great […]

“People don’t want to think about it.’ ‘I can see why,’ I said. ‘It makes my head hurt.’”

I downloaded this after reading Ellesfena’s review, and enjoyed it immensely. It’s an odd little book, but comes together beautifully at the end. I literally got goosebumps at the big reveal, when everything finally made sense. “I still think about the letter you asked me to write. It nags at me, even though you’re gone and there’s no one to give it to anymore. Sometimes I work on it in my head, trying to map out the story you asked me to tell, about everything that […]

Dammit, Brashares!

March 10, 2017 by badkittyuno 5 Comments

I’ve been vacillating between rating this book poorly because it’s manipulative, or highly because its manipulation freaking worked on me. So we’re going with 3 stars — but I have thoughts! I’m also going to spoil the main thing that happens, but it happens towards the beginning and you can kind of see it coming so I think it’s not too spoiler-y. “You get older and you learn there is one sentence just four worlds long and if you can say it to yourself it […]

“Because you’ll never meet me and it’s the closest we can get.”

I really enjoyed this book, both before and after the bizarre twist that occurs. Reading some other reviews on Goodreads, it seems like most people either loved the twist, too, or let it destroy their opinion of the book. I personally felt the twist was hinted at well enough through the first part to make it less shocking and more expected, but I’m also reading The Rook right now, so my head’s in a weird place. If you’re at all interested in reading this book, I […]

“Life is rarely about what happened; it’s mostly about what we think happened.”

March 10, 2017 by badkittyuno 5 Comments

I was a little torn on rating this book, because I really liked a few of the essays, kind of hated a couple, and felt indifferent towards most of the rest. My indifference, however, stemmed mostly from the fact that Klosterman’s pop culture world runs about 5 to 10 years ahead of mine, so much of what he discusses feeling fervently about as a 20 something, I totally missed out on as a pre-teen. But I’m going with 3 stars, because if I could never muster the energy […]

Cannonball!

March 7, 2017 by badkittyuno 13 Comments

Overdrive has a ton of book recommendations for Women’s History Month, which is awesome. I’m also really pleased that I’ve already read a ton of them, mostly thanks to you guys. I flipped through some of the options and picked Andie Mitchell’s It Was Me All Along because it said that she was a food blogger and I thought that might be interesting to read about. These memoirs focus mostly on her childhood issues with her weight, which actually makes the third or fourth book that […]
