This is another book Overdrive recommended for Women’s History Month, and yet another body-positive memoir I’ve read recently. I’d never heard of Brittany Gibbons prior to reading this, but I enjoyed it. It’s not really a book about being a “fat girl”, like the cover implies, but it’s definitely about dealing with a crappy childhood and learning to embrace yourself. She also REALLY hated college, and talks about that a lot here. “First things first, I’m going to tell you why I’m fat, because I […]
“Everything’s a haunted house in today’s America. Everything’s in need of an exorcism.”
So the only other book I’ve tried by Seanan McGuire was Every Heart a Doorway. That book was fascinating — it had a lot of really neat ideas and was well-executed. I remember that my main complaint was that it was too short. This book also had some really cool ideas, about ghosts and witches and the dead. But I thought the execution was poor and again, it just wasn’t long enough to really support the story. So this is about a dead girl named […]
Y’all are going to love this one
Okay, speaking directly to those of y’all who love Mary Roach and that book about being a woman in Victorian times — just go read this book. It is by far the funniest book about plagues that I have ever read. And I am saying that as a person who has read multiple books about plagues. Jennifer Wright, who also wrote that book about bad breakups throughout time that most of y’all didn’t seem to like very much, wrote Get Well Soon about 14 different plagues throughout […]
“I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.”
So this book is probably skewed towards middle schoolers more than the typical teenagers I think of when I think of YA. But I also think it should be required reading for just about anyone. It’s a wonderful story and could teach just about anyone how to respect other people a little bit better. “Kinder than is necessary. Because it’s not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.” Auggie Pullman is about to start 5th grade at a brand new school, and […]
So here’s my issue with superhero movies….
Don’t read this review if you plan to read Because You’ll Never Meet Me. And then don’t bother to read this book. You should still read Because You’ll Never Meet Me — it’s a good book and better to read spoiler-free. But I’d stop right there, because I found the follow up really disappointing. “Together we pass for human, Oliver Paulot. Veins pulsing with lightning.” So we pick up with Moritz and Ollie pretty much right where the last book left off. They’ve discovered the truth about […]
“There is no formula when it comes to gender and sexuality.”
vel veeter called Redefining Realness “an impossible book to write” — primarily because Mock has to decide how to tell her story without making grand claims of representation for others. I agree with this assessment, and add that it’s always hard to review a book about someone’s life. However — I feel it was overall a very successful book. “Being exceptional isn’t revolutionary, it’s lonely. It separates you from your community. Who are you, really, without community? I have been held up consistently as a token, […]
