Hi, I’m badkittyuno, and I’ve totally failed my New Year’s resolution to remain current on my reviews by somehow falling 15 reviews behind. In my defense, my life has completely fallen apart since mid-March — but also I’m lazy and would much rather read than review. Caitlin_D suggested lumping reviews of similar books together in an effort to get myself back on track, and my baby sister is very wise, so… Here we go! It’s Memoir Time. Grace Notes: My Recollections by Katey 4 Stars I […]
“You remind me of everything that followed.”
This was a really beautiful story. I would highly recommend listening to the audio version if you can. The narrator’s accent was amazing. I could have listened to it all day. “In so many ways, his family’s life feels like a string of accidents, unforeseen, unintended, one incident begetting another…They were things for which it was impossible to prepare but which one spent a lifetime looking back at, trying to accept, interpret, comprehend. Things that should never have happened, that seemed out of place and […]
I liked the bits with the horses
Caitlin_ D called this story classic Jojo, and she’s absolutely right. It’s not as wonderful as, at least in my opinion, Me Before You was, but it’s still a decent story and I enjoyed the characters. “… “Lived happily ever after,” Natasha concluded, thinking back to that photograph. The woman who was well loved. John’s glare was withering. “Are you kidding me?” he said. “Who the hell gets to live happily ever after?” As usual, JoJo weaves several stories together. In the past, we have a […]
“…never forget that beneath all the appalling behavior there was a human being.”
Elizabeth Vargas, an anchor for 20/20, managed to spend years working as a very public person despite the high levels of anxiety that it gave her. Over the years, she began to cope with that anxiety by drinking. This memoir is her story of how she got to that point, and how she recovered from it. It’s very well written, she has a beautiful voice. It’s very honest and she holds nothing back. From a very young age, Vargas suffered from anxiety attacks as her […]
“My father had more than fifty children.”
Another memoir about a messed-up childhood! You know, I wonder sometimes why I, and my little sister, read so many of these books. We certainly did not have messed up childhoods. For one thing these memoirs are everywhere: easily accessible, quick to read. But for me, I think the appeal is reading how another person lived their life, and sort of testing it against my own abilities. Could I survive like that? It’s the same reason I like to read books about people who have […]
The Rules Do Not Apply
I just realize that eight of the last ten books that I’ve read have been memoirs, and seven of those eight have been written by women. So my apologies if this review isn’t too in-depth — I’m trying to sneak it in before April ends and honestly I didn’t really like it very much so I can’t remember too much. It doesn’t help that I immediately followed it with a book by someone with almost exactly the same name but a much more interesting story. […]
