CBR11Bingo: Summer Read

An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

July 30, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

An Anonymous Girl is ridiculous — it’s silly and trashy and I doubt I’ll remember a bit of it six months from now, but it was definitely entertaining and I blew through it so I’m counting this as my “summer read!”. “We all have reasons for our actions. Even if we hide the reason from those who think they know us best. Even if the reasons are so deeply buried we can’t recognize them ourselves.” Okay, let me see if I can wrangle this one […]

What the Eyes Don't See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City by Mona Hanna-Attisha

July 30, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

What the Eyes Don’t See mixes Dr. Hanna-Attisha’s own personal and familial history with the story of her part in proving that the children of Flint, Michigan were being poisoned by their water. Each aspect of the book is interesting, although they don’t mesh as seamlessly as I’d like. I would have love to have read an entire book about just her life or an entire book about just Flint, but I doubt there’s enough material here for either. Regardless, her passion for children and […]

CBR11Bingo: I Love This

All That Remains: A Life In Death by Sue Black

July 30, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I went through a phase as a young adult when I thought I might go to school to be a forensic scientist or medical examiner (this was when we were all watching a lot of CSI). That didn’t pan out, but I still love reading books about the profession (I Love This!). Dr. Judy Melinek’s Working Stiff: Two Years, 262 Bodies, and the Making of a Medical Examiner was another excellent book about the same subject. And if you liked Mary Roach’s Stiff, I’d recommend this as […]

“This world demands nothing short of perfection from women who aim high, and our need to see perfection in women has, until recently, far outweighed our need for their participation.”

Era of Ignition: Coming of Age in a Time of Rage and Revolution by Amber Tamblyn

July 30, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Amber Tamblyn has been acting since she was a child, and raised in a very “Hollywood” environment. Her father is Russ Tamblyn from West Side Story, and she has a lot of famous people listed as godfathers on her Wikipedia page. She’s famous for several roles, notably The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Joan of Arcadia and last season or so of House. She’s also married to a fairly famous actor (David Cross — she discusses him in the book, not always in a glowing way). All […]

CBR11Bingo: Listicle

Becoming by Michelle Obama

July 30, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Back from vacation and back to reviewing! Not that there was any chance I wouldn’t read Michelle Obama’s incredibly well-reviewed memoir Becoming, but I do love that Barack Obama listed it as one of his favorite books for 2018 (Listicle!). It’s so good, and while I listened to the audio book and highly recommend that format for the lovely experience that is Michelle Obama’s voice, I also perused the hardback copy (thanks Caitlin_D!) and the pictures included there are great. “For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere […]

CBR11Bingo: Youths!

The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson

July 12, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Maureen Johnson has contributed short stories to YA collections that I’ve read before, but The Vanishing Stair and its predecessor, Truly Devious, are the first stand-alone YA novels (Youths!) that I’ve read by her. The Vanishing Stair, in my opinion, really improves on the first book — mostly because it focuses solely on my favorite character, Stevie. However, you really need to read the first one before you read the sequel so go run and do that before you read my review. I’ll wait. “He looked a […]
