Happy April and Happy Poetry Month

All of Those Babies by Mylisa Larsen

Aunt Sue's Stories by Langston Hughes

Bless Our Pets : Poems of Gratitude for Our Animal Friends by Lee Bennett Hopkins

April 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Happy April and Happy Poetry Month. I am sure I will find other poetry books for kids, but I will start with three that I just found. All are available (or with the last one “soon” in April 2024) but all have been read via online reader copies. The first is All of Those Babies by Mylisa Larsen and illustrated by Stephanie Laberis . This book is one solid poem that rhymes and has repetition. The idea is how all babies, be they lizard, human […]

I Live in a Tree Trunk by Meg Fleming

March 9, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I live in a tree trunk. I live in a barn. I live in a shoebox. I’m down on the farm… So say the animals (and much more) of I Live in a Tree Trunk. Each animal, in simple text by Meg Fleming and simple art by Brandon James Scott, tell us where they live. Things are aimed at the aged three and up, with a few rhymes to help pass the time. There is nothing OMG Best Book Ever! to this picture book, […]

It is: “These are cool books, but I do not have the 250-word minimum for each of them” time.

Wild Peace by Irene Latham

Why? A Conversation About Race by Taye Diggs

Who Loves Little Lemur? by Jay Fleck

May 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is: “These are cool books, but I do not have the 250-word minimum for each of them” time. We start with Wild Peace which was penned by Irene Latham and illustrations that came from Il Sung Na.  This is a lovely poem about taking a break and about imagination set in the picture book format. The start and end have a few unusual illustrations that I never completely “got” but overall, my favorite part of the book are the illustrations. This is a relaxing […]

“Play play play! Now now now!” say all babies!

Play in the Wild: How Baby Animals Like to Have Fun (In the Wild). by Lita Judge

February 12, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lita Judge is at it again with Play in the Wild: How Baby Animals Like to Have Fun (In the Wild). They show us how adorable baby animals do adorable things in the wild. Each animal is given a small paragraph or two showing how play helps them grow. And how play will help them survive when they are older. Sweet illustrations that are not overly bold, but not muted either, run about the page letting us know how each critter jumps and plays and […]

Haircuts for Little Lambs by Tomie dePaola

February 28, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not sure how I missed the book Haircuts for Woolsey’s by Tomie dePaola as I do enjoy his work. Now published under the name, Haircuts for Little Lambs I see why this might not have been one of his more popular stories. Totally done in dePaola’s style of illustrations and text, this is a fun story about Spring and how fickle it can be. Plus, there is one clever one grandmother who knows how to take care of a pesky problem.   However, I […]

Wild Baby doesn’t cover it.

Wild Baby by Cori Doerrfled

April 4, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Wild Baby by Cori Doerrfled is a cute story, but one that fell flat for me. As mentioned in other reviews, I am not a fan of the “comedy of errors” storyline, especially when it shows a child clueless to what is around them with that selfishness kids can have. The baby is carefree and the poor, haggard mother must save her willful child from literal death! Then, all the baby must do is say, “I am sorry” and all is forgiven. To me, this […]
