One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories by B.J. Novak My rating: 4 of 5 stars “One More Thing” by B.J. Novak is a funny, dark, cynical, deep, well-written collection of short stories. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook because several famous comedians/celebrities and Novak himself read the stories. While there’s a grab bag of different tones throughout the stories, there’s several stories that have a real grit to them. While sometimes this grit is housed in some absurd scenarios, there’s no mistaking that […]
So my favorite story was the one with the warlord…
I’m two weeks and eight reviews behind — help! “In the aftermath of an athletic humiliation on an unprecedented scale—a loss to a tortoise in a footrace so staggering that, his tormenters teased, it would not only live on in the record books, but would transcend sport itself, and be taught to children around the world in textbooks and bedtime stories for centuries; that hundreds of years from now, children who had never heard of a “tortoise” would learn that it was basically a fancy type […]

*Disclaimer: this post refers to the audiobook.* I never really got into audiobooks (unless they were the Harry Potter books read by Jim Dale), but my sister recommended B.J. Novak’s One More Thing specifically for the audiobook. I gave it a try, and it’s been a delight. I’ll be separating this review into the content and then the medium of audiobook, because there are separate things to say about each of them. First, the stories themselves: it’s a mixed bag of genuinely interesting, too-clever, and […]
It’s … Fine
Hmmm. So, there are definitely parts of this book that I really, really enjoyed. Parts that either made me laugh out loud or that were funny without being chuck funny. But other parts … I’m unclear if my humor is just not the same, or if I wasn’t getting it, or if I’m not the target. I picked the audio version, which was read not just by Mr. Novak (of The Office fame), but Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, Katy Perry, Lena Dunham and others. That […]
