A celebrity book that isn’t a memoir. With science! And research!

January 11, 2016 by narfna 6 Comments

I can’t believe I’m only now finishing my first book of the year. It’s January 11th! What am I doing with my life??? Anyway, this was an excellent first book of the year. I can’t even tell you how refreshing it is to read a book written by a celebrity that isn’t a self-obsessed money grab that makes too much of too little (if any) substance. It’s also well-written. And entertaining. And informative. And helpful! Several years ago when Aziz Ansari was putting together some […]

Text Me Later

Audio version for the win! Seriously, listening to Aziz Ansari read this book may have taken it from a three-star to a four-star rating for me. It’s entertaining for sure, but hearing the words delivered by Mr. Ansari made it all the better. Mr. Ansari and Mr. Klinenberg take a look at how dating and marriage has changed in the last decade or so, with newer technology such as online dating, texting, and other social media methods of communicating. It’s an interesting read that goes […]

Dating in the new millenium

December 11, 2015 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I was happy when my book club decided to read Modern Romance (2015) by Aziz Ansari because it had already been on my library wait list for months. I had to do some maneuvering to pick it up before our meeting, but I was looking forward to reading it. I knew Aziz Ansari was a comedian from Parks and Rec, but I had never seen his stand-up and was not too familiar with him. I still expected great things, though, because comedians often write entertaining, surprisingly […]

Looking for love in all the digital places

September 24, 2015 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Aziz Ansari’s take on relationships was on my radar after seeing him promote it on late night television. I thought the concept was interesting: an academic examination of present-day relationships through the filter of comedy. Though I liked the book, and found the material intriguing, I can’t call the format an unmitigated success. I first came across Ansari during his hilarious turn as Tom Haverford on Parks and Rec and have seen a bit of his stand-up and he is refreshing, honest, and really quite […]

How to use food rakes online. And other social media insights on love.

August 8, 2015 by bonnie 1 Comment

When I heard that Aziz Ansari was coming out with a book, I placed a hold in my library catalog IMMEDIATELY. And then I waited FOREVER. I heard during the wait that Modern Romance was not a memoir but an exploration of love and social media. I was intrigued. I mean, there was no way I was not going to read this book. I love me some Aziz, particularly because I love his interpretation of Tom Haverford. So in honor of this auspicious character, Tom […]

Personal Ads to Online Dating to Mobile Apps… What Comes Next?

July 16, 2015 by Lisa Bee 4 Comments

After reading another Cannonballer’s review of Modern Romance, I decided I had to take a look and see what it’s all about! A look at the modern dating scene from a sociological perspective mixed with personal memories, and coming from the hilarious Aziz Ansari? That sounds like it was made for me! This book was in fact quite interesting, very easy to zip through while on a couple of long car-rides, and had a light and funny voice to it overall. But there were a […]
