And I Won’t Sit Down And I Won’t Shut Up And Most of All I Will Not Grow Up

September 24, 2015 by Quorren 7 Comments

I feel out of the loop, musically, since I moved last year and left behind the best independent indie rock station ever.  And working now in a concrete basement means I can’t even listen to their mobile app either.  So if the US has finally woken up to Frank Turner, first off, horray!  Second, you probably don’t need the following link barrage I’m about to hit you with.  Third, I devoured this book on my lunch breaks (as well as my lunch) while being forced […]

“I’ve always felt like a failure inside if I’m not already a success.”

September 6, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

4.5 stars I’m trying to recall where I first encountered Felicia Day. I think it may in fact have been on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where she played one of the many potential slayers in season seven. I know I saw her in Dr Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog (true story, on our honey-moon seven years ago, I declined to go out and explore Stockholm with my husband until I had used the hotel wi-fi – which was really rather slow – to download and watch the […]

The Iran We Didn’t Know as Told by a Damn Smart Woman

July 20, 2015 by ElCicco 2 Comments

Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel is both an autobiography and an historical/political education. Her simple yet bold black and white drawings beautifully illustrate the story of her childhood in Teheran in the early 1980s, her teen years in Vienna and her return to Iran in 1989. As an observer of and participant in Iran’s revolutionary upheaval, Satrapi gives a personal view of events and their effect on her family’s welfare while neatly outlining the complicated and complex national story that serves as their context. This is […]

Another Memoir About a Nutty Family

June 8, 2015 by genericwhitegirl Leave a Comment

Gwendolyn Knapp is only in her thirties, but her colorful family and personal relationships have already provided enough fodder for a memoir. After While is the story of Gwendolyn, her sister Molly, her mother Margie, and her stepfather John. Of course, there is a host of other family members and the occasional love interest that pepper her life with stress and shenanigans. Knapp grew up in Florida where she lived with her packrat mother and overachieving goth sister, as well as her mother’s extended family. […]

The Man behind the Discworld

March 12, 2015 by TylerDFC 2 Comments

I just learned Terry Pratchett died today. I’m trying to process that grief and it feels like I’ve lost an old friend. The world is a worse place without him there is no doubt. I wrote this review a couple of weeks ago but hadn’t posted it yet. Now is as good as time as any. Thank you, sir. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.   Not an autobiography, but still pretty close to it, A Slip of the Keyboard is a collection […]

I waited over 3 months for this book to become available, the wait was TOTALLY worth it

February 26, 2015 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I feel like I should write a long and in depth review of how and why Amy Poehler’s Yes Please worked so well for me. But, I don’t know that I know how to do that. I’ve seen mostly positive reviews of the book and I agree that it’s my second favorite autobiography by a comedian, coming in right behind Craig Ferguson’s American on Purpose. But I don’t know that I’m able to put my finger on why. One of the detractions I’ve seen, and something […]
