A big disappointment.

The City of Dusk (The Dark Gods, #1) by Tara Sim

November 21, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

On the surface, I can’t really point to any specific reason for my low rating here, so you can write this review off as this simply being the wrong book for the wrong reader, if you want. I do want to say up front that the complaint I’m seeing from most people is that this book “reads like YA”, whatever that means. I don’t agree. This is an adult fantasy book. The characters are younger adults, like age eighteen to mid-twenties, but the writing itself is […]

Well-written but not for me.

I'm the Girl by Courtney Summers

November 17, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the content of my review. I don’t think Courtney Summers is for me. I’ve tried three of her books now. This is an extremely well-written and timely young adult thriller that is supposedly about the death of a young girl found on the side of the road, but it’s really about how the world is built to use up pretty young women and undermine their self-worth, and what that looks like. The main […]

The village of hysterical women.

The Village of Eight Graves (Kosuke Kindaichi, #3) by Seishi Yokomizo

November 3, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

Whaaaat the heck happened here. This was a mess. In fact, I had such a different reading experience with this third translated book in the Kosuke Kindaichi series that I kind of have to wonder if it was me and not the book, since presumably the English publisher chose to translate and publish this one third out of all the many, many available books in the series for a reason (and it’s not third in original publication order). I really wasn’t expecting to have such […]

A good time, but not my favorite of Hibbert’s books.

That Kind of Guy (Ravenswood, #3) by Talia Hibbert

November 1, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

The third act breakup in this one pooped the bed, but I really liked the rest of it. I wrote that ↑ back in July when I first finished the book, but now (on November 1st 😬) as I’m finally sitting down to write this review, I don’t have a very clear memory of the third act break-up, other than I didn’t buy it and it annoyed me. So, do with that what you will. I picked this book up out of order because of […]

Baby’s first Patricia Briggs.

Masques (Aralorn, #1) by Patricia Briggs

October 11, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is sort of a deceptive three stars, because I really liked the story and the characters, but the pacing is so weird, and the book isn’t fleshed out enough. Also, I did read the updated and expanded version, but I’m attaching this review to the cheesier, older, more colorful original cover because I like it better. It’s going to annoy me going forward in the series (which I will be doing!) that the other books won’t match, because even though this book was published […]

We Are Never Meeting in Real Life. by Samantha Irby

October 3, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

I enjoyed We Are Never Meeting in Real Life. while listening to it, but it’s been a couple of months since I finished it now, and it hasn’t really stuck with me, so I’m rating this one three stars. The only story that I remember with any clarity was the one about her cat, which I was always going to remember because it was about a cat, but also because her cat was SOMETHING ELSE. And also because the way she writes about her cat was very […]
