Three and a half Golden Pippins!

At the Edge of the Orchard by Tracy Chevalier

April 11, 2025 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

Girl with a Pearl Earring is one of my favourite historical novels, it’s extremely well researched and although it’s completely fictional, it could very plausibly have happened as told. Remarkable Creatures falls into the same category, I loved it as well, so I was ready to read/listen to another novel by Tracy Chevalier and see what world she would bring to life this time. In At the Edge of the Orchard, the historical background is the colonization of the American West, the Gold Rush, and […]

Stargate - en julefortelling/Brightly Shining by Ingvild H. Rishøi

Nowhere Book Bingo 25: Local author (the story takes place about 15 minutes from where I work) The full review of this on my blog contains spoilers so if you don’t want to know how the book ends, and why I can’t rate this book higher, skip the paragraphs I’ve highlighted. Ten-year-old Ronja and her sixteen-year-old sister Melissa are used to disappointments, living alone with a father who only occasionally sobers up long enough to hold down a job for a month or two. They’re […]

A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland

CBR16 Bingo: Golden Gold in the title and gold as a pivotal part of the plot. Also pretty much all of the central characters are solid gold. Kadou is the younger brother of the sultan of Arasht, and is delighted that she’s just given birth to a healthy baby, putting him further down the line of succession. Unfortunately, the baby’s father, a powerful ambassador at court, believes Kadou to be jealous and a threat to both his baby niece and his sister. Nothing could be […]

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

Nowhere Book Bingo: From a genre you’ve never read (true crime) CBR16 Bingo: Fiasco (Theranos was a massive fraud and a fiasco) I’ve owned this book since 2020 and am pretty sure I picked it up in an e-book sale because of the many Cannonball reviews I’ve read about it over the years. Not being particularly interested in the tech world or medical science, and certainly, not someone who reads a lot of business news, I didn’t really hear about this case as it was […]

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Husband Material by Alexis Hall

CBR16 Bingo: Rings (a whole bunch of rings being exchanged in this book) In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to date for a number of reasons, pretended to be in love, fell in love, broke up, and then decided to actually date for real. By the time this book starts, they have been together for a good while (I want to say at least a year?) and as is often the case at a certain age of your life, they keep being invited […]

“You made a severed finger into a feckin’ snow globe.” “It was almost Christmas,” she says with a shrug. “It felt … festive.”

Leather & Lark by Brynne Weaver

3.5 stars CBR16 Bingo: Bananas   Lark Montague and Lachlan Kane have an unfortunate first meeting, when Lark during Halloween has had an “accident” and needs a car and a body fished out of a lake. Lachlan is the man forced by his employer to come help her do this. Lachlan is in scuba gear, Lark is heavily made up in a Halloween costume. Lachlan chooses to force Lark into the car of his trunk to transport her unseen away from the incident site, not […]
