The Wedding People by Alison Espach

March 12, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Phoebe is a professor of Victorian literature; something which informs most of her decision-making. When her husband leaves her for a younger, more attractive colleague after a long fertility journey, Phoebe takes a page from her tragic heroines and decides she no longer wants to live. She checks into the beautiful if ostentatious Newport Hotel with the intent of swallowing a bottle of painkillers while enjoying an overpriced ocean view. The only problem is that the hotel has been fully booked by a wedding party, […]

Something Worth Living For

Veronika decides to die by Paulo Coelho

August 19, 2021 by Singsonggirl 4 Comments

Veronika, a pretty 24-year-old Slovenian decides to take her life. She survives the suicide attempt and is admitted to the post-Yugoslavian state-of-the-art mental hospital Villette in Ljubljana where she meets the different inhabitants, including a psychiatrist with rather unconventional and probably (definitely) unethical methods. It’s a slightly cliched setup, but I enjoyed the sense of humour in it, the different characters, their distinct personalities and their rather realistic backgrounds. Coelho wrote this based on his own experiences in mental wards and in those life stories […]

It’s a Wonderful Life (Now With Books!)

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

February 20, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CW: suicide, suicidal ideation This was an interesting premise but has some deep (spoiler-y) flaws in the magical element that make it hard to get behind it from an entirely logical perspective. The not-spoiler part (available as part of book’s blurb): sometimes, instead of dying, you end up in a midway point which, for our protagonist, takes the form of an endless library in which it is always midnight and which is librarian’d by her old middle school librarian. You can read any of the […]

A headlesss classic AND (totally unrelatedly) a short story about an attempted suicide

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving

The Day I Died by E. B. Black

March 17, 2019 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

I read this because it was short and a classic.  I’ve seen the movie, but somehow I never had to read this book.  It took me a couple nights reading while I was laying in bed at night.  It was definitely interesting, but it was a little slow.  I honestly don’t read a lot of classics, so it could just be that I’m not used to the pacing of books written a long time ago. I don’t know.  I didn’t love it, and I didn’t […]
