Fantasy with less romance but more dogs

I’m on a fantasy kick recently, this time without the romance but with plenty of court intrigue, magical powers and violence. Trigger warning for abuse and death (including animals). Assassin’s Apprentice is the first book in Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy, which has been reviewed favorably several times on CBR. Add this one to the favorable reviews. Not quite what I was expecting, but I like!

I’ve been meaning to read this series for yearrrrrrs, and I finally got around to it. It was . . . not what I was expecting! I mean, right away it’s pretty hard not to notice it’s in first person POV, which is still incredibly rare in epic fantasy, and I think dangerous because it’s so hard to pull off.
