Before I grow up I want to read all the books in the world!

Before I Grew Up by John Miller

The Snail with the Right Heart: A True Story by Maria Popova

February 4, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Picture book time! The roundup of two different but equally marvelous books are below. They are for all ages, but best for the older (at least five and up) child, but adults please note that these two books are a must read for you. Maybe you will not learn something (though the second does have a bit of gender commentary) but you should find something to be in awe over. The artwork alone is worth the price of admission! Before I Grew Up has some […]

Starting off the year with crayons

Crayola A Visual Biography of the World's Most Famous Crayon by Lisa Solomon, Crayola LLC

January 1, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Somehow I’ve started the past few years reviewing a non-fiction science-y book; this year the one I started was denser than anticipated and I haven’t finished it yet. Instead, I have Crayola: a Visual Biography of the World’s Most Famous Crayon. This sounded really interesting, but I have to admit I was a disappointed that it was more corporate propaganda than history/biography. In retrospect, that shouldn’t be too surprising given that the company is actually listed as a co-author. There is a little bit of […]

The Girl Who is Spring

Feelings: A Story in Seasons by Manjit Thapp

December 2, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Feelings: A Story in Seasons is promoted as both a poetry book and as a graphic novel. However, it is more than that. It is also a picture book with its sensual and heavy illustrations. It is a book about emotions and the depression that changes them during the different seasons the author, Manjit Thapp, faces. This book is a poetic look at how depression is the season we are reading about. It is presented to us as a chapter, Summer, Fall, Winter, Monsoon, and […]

When you know the author you know reading their books is a must!

Slip by Marika McCoola

November 16, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have said it before and will say again, the perks of working in a bookstore rock. That biggest of all perks is the reading of a book well before it comes out. And y’all might have to wait until June for Slip by Marika McCoola (unless you can find a reader copy like I did) but you can read this review today (tomorrow and the next day, too). Not to mention that if you go to your local independent bookstore today you can preorder. […]

Pirate Queen: A Story of Zheng Yi Sao by Helaine Becker, Ill. Liz Wong

What Isabella Wanted: Isabella Stewart Gardner Builds a Museum by Candace Fleming Ill. Matthew Cordell

October 18, 2021 by NTE Leave a Comment

But Fortune cares nothing for your dreams. She takes up your life in her cup and shakes it so hard your teeth rattle in your head and your heart roars like a dragon in your chest. Then she throws the bones onto her table of lacquer and jade. Your fate is sealed. – Helaine Becker, Pirate Queen: A Story of Zheng Yi Sao Did I know much about Zheng Yi Sao before I read this? Only that she existed, reigned over the South China Sea […]

Jackson Pollock Splashed Paint and Wasn’t Sorry by Fausto Gilberti

Yves Klein painted Everything Blue and Wasn’t Sorry by Fausto Gilberti

Banksy Graffitied Walls and Wasn’t Sorry by Fausto Gilberti

September 3, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Fausto Gilberti has a (currently) four book series of modern artists. These contemporary people are profiled in a simple, hit the highlights manner. The cover of each one tells you all you need to know about the artwork that is inside. Gilberti has their own style they use to help give you a look into people like Banksy, Jackson Pollock, Yves Klein, and Yayoi Kusama.  I recently read the Pollock, Klein, and Banksy books. I think I have seen Yayoi Kusama Covered Everything in Dots […]
