My Favorite In The Series So Far

The Draining Lake by Arnaldur Indriðason

March 29, 2021 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who enjoy a good mystery. In a nutshell: A skeleton has been found in a drying lake bed. Might be suicide, except there’s Cold War-era Soviet equipment tied around the skeleton’s body. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I had bought a bunch of this author’s books all at once, and finally decided to pick up this last one. Review: These books are either growing on me a bit, or the story within this one was just a bit more interesting […]

Silence of the Grave – Arnaldur Indriðason (2001)

Silence of the Grave by Arnaldur Indriðason

March 29, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

I went back and forth on this novel as I was reading it because of how slim it is in parts, but then how solid it becomes in others. A body in found with some clothes in tatters in a shallow grave. It becomes clear that the body is 70+ years old so the investigation into the death takes a slight backseat to the necessary archaeological concerns. While the body is slowly being exhumed, our lead inspector begins the arduous process of tracking down 75 […]

I Got My Wish

Voices by Arnaldur Indriðason

October 21, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

BINGO: Red (and my first actual BINGO – all the colors!) Best for: People who like mysteries set around Christmastime. In a nutshell: Detective Erlendur is called to investigate a murder that took place at a hotel a week before Christmas. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I’m enjoying having something somewhat easy to read in between more substantial books. That sounds like an insult, but I don’t mean it that way at all. Review: I said in my last review that I was […]

Ugh, Some Men Are The Worst

Silence of the Grave by Arnaldur Indriðason

September 21, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who like a mystery that you might actually start to be able to solve, but probably won’t. Like, nothing in here was utterly shocking, but it wasn’t so telescoped that I could have written the ending myself. In a nutshell: CN for the book: Intimate Partner Violence, Ableism Detective Erlendur is back. His daughter is in hospital and unconscious, while he tries to solve the mystery of some bones found near a construction site that are likely 60 or more years old. […]

You Can’t Escape Your Past

Jar City by Arnaldur Indriðason

September 10, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

BINGO: Fresh Start – #1 in the Reykjavik Murder Mystery series Best for: Fans of murder mysteries set in Iceland. In a nutshell: CN: Sexual Assault Detective Erlendur is called to investigate the murder of an older man. As the investigation unfolds, he discovers a possible link to crimes the victim committed in the past. Worth quoting: N/A Why I chose it: I like mysteries set in Iceland, and this series comes generally well-reviewed. Review: This book didn’t exactly go where I expected it to, […]

In an Occupied Country

The Shadow Killer (Reykjavík Wartime Mystery 2) by Arnaldur Indriðason

September 2, 2020 by blauracke Leave a Comment

In 1941, a travelling salesman is found murdered and with a swastika painted on his forehead in a flat in Reykjavík. The local detective Flóvent is joined in his investigation by Thorson, a member of the military police, when the murder weapon is identified as the gun of an American soldier. The real protagonist of this book, however, are not the two investigators, but wartime Iceland, with American and British soldiers invading the small country in great numbers and changing pretty much everything for the […]
