Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover?

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

January 9, 2025 by Uncoolaidman 2 Comments

Ok, I admit it. I judged a book by its cover. I really try to not be shallow or too focused on aesthetics when I walk through a bookstore, but I admit that the cover for Cloud Cuckoo Land has been catching my eye for a few years now. I know a good cover has no relation to the quality of the book, but something must draw my attention when I am not hunting with a specific book in mind. So, when I saw Cloud […]

…a voice on the radio offering a loom on which to spin his dreams.

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

CBR15 BINGO (On the Air square: Lots about radios and radio communication) BINGO! Dwelling to On The Air This is going to be a terrible review. I liked this book too much and generally, when that happens I freeze when trying to review it. Doerr’s book won the Pulitzer nearly a decade ago. I’ve had this book recommended to me countless times and, as is often the case with books everyone raves about, I put it on my virtual TBR pile and forget about it. Why do I […]

“I know why those librarians read the old stories to you. Because if it’s told well enough, for as long as the story lasts, you get to slip the trap.”

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

This book has been spoken about with great reverence by many people in my circle, calling it life-changing, and inspiring, a read that sticks with you. One person I know is on their second reading of this big book, and if that’s not a strong endorsement, to pick it up, I don’t know what is! I checked it out once before and returned it unread, feeling daunted by the length. But it came back around again on my holds, so I decided to dig in. […]

“Stranger, whoever you are, open this to learn what will amaze you.”

CLOUD CUCKOO LAND by ANTHONY DOERR

February 19, 2023 by reginadelmar Leave a Comment

The book begins: “Stranger, whoever you are, open this to learn what will amaze you.” Consider me amazed. The review excerpts in the front of the book gush with praise: “sings with beauty,” “sweeping and atmospheric,” “beautiful and enthralling. . . “ Yep. Anthony Doerr has said Cloud Cuckoo Land is a paean to books, but it is also a paean to great stories passed on through generations. Parts of the narrative may get lost, or changed by the teller, but a good story remains. […]

“But books, like people, die.”

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

December 14, 2022 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My friend used to get (pre-Covid) backstage passes to an author series at the local university. Before the presentation in the auditorium, we got to meet with the author backstage. And there was even wine and appetizers! We always got a chance to talk with the author and get a signed book. It’s really very cool and not something I would be able to get tickets to by myself. Anyway, maybe the first one I went to with her was with Anthony Doerr when he […]

“Open this to learn all that will amaze you.”

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr

Everyone loves Cloud Cuckoo Land, and if you enjoy reading there’s quite a good chance you’ll enjoy this book, too. I think it’s about 7% overestimated, but the majority of book readers like this book for very good reasons – it’s really well written, the characters are engaging, the story is intricate and interwoven without ever feeling like you’ve totally lost the plot, and there’s a decent sense of mystery / coming to understand the purpose of a foreshadowed event or two. Do I think […]
