Stories about love and death. No songs, really. The title’s a bit misleading.

May 4, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

Overall rating: 3.5 stars This is an anthology, where all the stories are focused around love and death. I know, extremely surprising, based on the title. I will write a tiny bit about each of the stories, and conclude with my general impression of the anthology as a whole. It’s a really long post, what with me writing about 17 different stories. If you’re interested in my write-up, the review is here.

The one with all the Harry Dresden short stories

April 25, 2014 by Malin 1 Comment

This is a collection of short stories featuring Harry Dresden, and Jim Butcher introduces each one, explaining which collection it was first included in, or what purpose it was written for. I wouldn’t advise anyone who hasn’t read up to, and finished, at least book 12, Changes, as the last novella in the book takes place immediately after the events in that book, and it contains several spoilers. This month’s monthly motif is Short and Sweet, to read short story collection or anthologies. Which fit pretty much perfectly for me […]

Solaris Rising 2: The New Solaris Book of Science Fiction

March 23, 2014 by Vylotte Leave a Comment

As with most short story collections, there are a wide range of styles and approaches to what is touted as “groundbreaking science fiction.” Straight science fiction isn’t my first choice, so it was really nice to dive back into the genre with tastings of a wide range of subject matter and authors. This is also a finalist for the Philip K Dick award, (http://www.philipkdickaward.org/) though collections of short fiction don’t often win awards. With such a cross section, there’s bound to be mixed feelings throughout, […]

And Is Probably More Hygienic Than Most Bikers

March 11, 2014 by Marc Leave a Comment

Occasionally timing is simply not on our side.  Shortly after posting my review for Paul Chapman’s Porn Gnomes and Other Strange Tales, the author had a twenty four hour giveaway of his three collections, free to anyone who might have liked to download them from Amazon.  Though I would have liked to have spread the good word, it was only at the very end of that day that I saw the announcement, and the price shortly thereafter returned to normal. Then again, maybe that’s for the best.  The […]

You Won’t Believe These 11 Weird Tricks!

January 31, 2014 by Marc Leave a Comment

The democratization of the internet allows us all to find our own niches.  It is easier than it has ever been in human history to bury oneself in only like opinions to oneself or to indulge in the types of art and leisure that the greater populace at large would never even think twice of to such an extent that you might never get through it all.  There’s an absolute glut of content for all stripes.  Pop culture is Stanley Spadowski’s Clubhouse, and today we all get to […]
