As always, the book is better than the movie.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

July 13, 2019 by kella Leave a Comment

Despite so many people raving about this book, and seeing that Netflix had even got on board by making a movie, I kept shuffling it down my pile. Not sure why (weirdly, I think I was partially turned off by the long and clunky title), but I picked it up this spring  on a Saturday morning, intending to read a chapter or two…. but was immediately hooked and read the entire thing in one sitting. It is set in England just after the end of […]

Charming

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

April 21, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

Charming, adorable, sweet, romantic- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was all of those things without being cloying. The story is told in the form of letters between a variety of characters. Juliet is a writer living in London immediately after the end of World War II. She has recently embarked on a book tour to promote her collection of war-time dispatches. She is contacted by a man named Dawsey, who lives on the isle of Guernsey- he is in possession of a […]

“I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.”

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an absolutely charming novel set in 1946 England about the aftermath of World War II. The story is told exclusively through written correspondence between author Juliet Ashton, her editor Sidney, the various members of the Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society and a few other minor characters. Due to the popularity of the Netflix movie of the same name I have been on the wait list for both the audiobook and the hard copy of Guernsey for about 6 […]

Simply charming

December 18, 2018 by Carriejay Leave a Comment

In early 1946, author Juliet Ashton receives a letter from a man on Guernsey, who happens to own a book that was previously hers. They strike up a correspondence, and through that she learns about the German occupation of Guernsey during the war and the titular Society. Intrigued, Juliet wonders if this might be the subject for her next book. Told entirely through letters, we get to know the characters and fall in love with them as Juliet does. There’s Dawsey, who has Juliet’s old […]

Potato peel pie is a recipe for sanity

March 20, 2018 by Vada Sultenfuss 6 Comments

I decided to do CBR10 because I have been sitting on a to be read pile of books for a few years because I was working so much that I never had time to read. Beginning in 2016 I had plenty of time to read but the pre-election craziness kept me busy reading news sites every chance that I got. The post-election craziness was even worse. I vowed to myself that I would restore some of my sanity and lower my blood pressure in 2018 […]

“We clung to books and to our friends; they reminded us that we had another part to us.”

May 19, 2017 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I have had this book on my to read list since CBR5 in 2013. This year I decided as part of my overall Cannonball goal of 78 books, that I was also going to work my way through my audiobook and owned book backlog. A little. With that goal in mind I set up a monthly goal list, with a book or two I already own, a book or two I have in audio form in Audible, and then I pick a couple more to […]
