“I expect you’ve heard of the Trojan War and how it was caused by Norma Jeane Baker, harlot of Troy”

Norma Jeane Baker of Troy by Anne Carson

The past few vacations I’ve gone on, whenever the official tchotchke-hunting time comes up with the friends/family I’m traveling with, I’ve taken to seeking out the nearest local bookstore for my souvenir-hunting. I’ve found it to be a great alternative to buying something made of plastic that will collect dust and eventually get thrown away – instead, I purchase a book and write the bookstore name/location/date on the inside jacket, and whenever I pick up that book I can take a trip down memory lane […]

He came after Homer and before Gertrude Stein, a diffi-cult interval for a poet.

Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson

This a short verse novel that takes on a few forms (and like it’s subject could maybe be said to have many faces?). It’s an autobiography of a poet, it’s a novel about a mythical being, and it’s form of mythopoesis that brings that myth into the modern world. It’s not always doing all three at once, and at times jumps back and forth among those different tasks. I am going to be honest here. I might not hit the word count with each of these reviews. Some books lend themselves to more of a review than others. Annie John – 3/5 Stars Annie John is a short novel by the Antiguan novelist Jamaican Kincaid. Jamaica Kincaid is best known for her thoroughly brilliant and forever anthologized short story “Girl”. “Girl” is so good not only because of the power of the voice and the effectiveness of the images, but because it’s the […]

Aren’t we all a little monstrous?

November 19, 2014 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

This is an odd, original, remarkable book.  I didn’t know anything about it when I picked it up–let’s be real, I was just looking for a short book so I can finish my Cannonball in time!  And it was unlike anything I’ve read this year. This short (160 pages!) novel in verse is Anne Carson’s modern re-telling of a Greek myth that was originally told by Stesichoros, a Sicilian Greek of the early classical era.  In the original, Heracles murders the red-winged monster Geryon and steals his […]
