This wasn’t my favorite entry in the series, but I still can’t wait to find out where its going.

Marked in Flesh is the fourth in a series of books, so really, if you haven’t read any of these yet, I can’t imagine that this would be a good place to start. This book is honestly just filler — the major plot points have already been laid out, most of the main characters have been introduced, its just marking time until some of the larger conflicts occur in future installments. Here’s the main thing about these books. I know that these Anne Bishop novels […]

I’M ALIIIIIIIIIIIIVE

June 30, 2016 by narfna 14 Comments

I have been trying to write this review for over a month. First I was blocked because of something I couldn’t figure out how to say about it, and then I moved, and then I went on vacation, and I’ve only read seven books this month! SEVEN! I give up officially on writing a coherent review because I just want it out of my life. I have no idea what I’m about to type. Also, in order to get in a frame of mind to […]

Don’t go into the woods

April 15, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

3.5 stars This is book four in an ongoing series. It is not the place to start. This review will contain mild spoilers for things that happened in previous books. If you are interested (I think the series is very entertaining and doing something different from most paranormal fantasy, I know others who strongly disagree), you should start with book one, Written in Red. Both the human and the supernatural inhabitants in the Lakeside courtyard are concerned about the further scheming of the Humans First […]

I knew better, I really did. This is absolutely a typical Anne Bishop book.

There is no doubt that Anne Bishop can write a compelling and entertaining story. The problem is that lurking under that very compelling and entertaining story is an ugly miasma of misogyny and -in this book’s case- racism. While not overtly rapey as The Black Jewels trilogy was, this book is still very much within Anne Bishop’s oeuvre, and that oeuvre means it’s sexist as hell and contains some really disturbing relationships. The plot is simple enough. A girl, Meg, on the run from people who think they own […]

I love these books. But, hey, what exactly was silver?

April 8, 2015 by scootsa1000 10 Comments

I know there’s been quite a difference of opinion on this series, but I’m going to side with Malin here. This is my favorite current series of books. I’m a little bit in love with them. A Vision in Silver is book three of Anne Bishop’s “Others” books, and they focus on Meg Corbyn, a young blood prophet who seeks shelters with the world’s “others”, the terra indigene, who were the first inhabitants of the earth. Way, way before humans. I enjoy reading about Meg’s interactions […]

None of the visions seemed particularly silvery to me, actually

March 14, 2015 by Malin 6 Comments

This is book three in The Others series, which is one of my absolute favourite paranormal fantasy series at the moment. While you are given enough information to start with this one, you’ll get the most enjoyment if you start at the beginning, with the excellent Written in Red. There will also be minor spoilers for the earlier books in the series here, so if you don’t like that sort of thing, skip the review until you’re caught up. In a world where humans are […]
