It’s a zoo out there

A Troop of Kangaroos: A Book of Animal Group Names by Lisa Mundorff

June 23, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

How do you write a 250-word review on a book with probably less than 100 words? Very carefully! A Troop of Kangaroos: A Book of Animal Group Names (written and illustrated by Lisa Mundorff) is a clever book about names. And not just “Kathy Kangaroo” or “Sammy Sardine” or “Bob Otter.” No, I mean that a group of sardines is call a family. A bunch of kangaroos are called a troop. And a bunch of skunks are a real stench. No, really a stench of […]

Pup 681: A Sea Otter Rescue Story by Jean Reidy

May 27, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Pup 681: A Sea Otter Rescue Story is based loosely on an actual situation of an otter (Luna of the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago) being rescued. After I finished reading, I was not sure I liked this cute, poetic story of a baby otter and the adventure it takes to find their home. I feel that is probably since it was too cute for me in places, and maybe also even too short. But this book can be fun for the right audience. There are […]

Maud: Meet Cannonball Read. Cannonball Read: Meet Maud.

Meet Maud the Koala by Jennifer E. Morris

April 12, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The other day, several books dropped on my foot. After a few frails and dressings were uttered, it became clear that one of those little darlings turned out to be a skinny (though pointy cornered) beginning graphic novel called Meet Maud the Koala by Jennifer E. Morris. Looking at it I asked myself, “Self. Why did you buy this book?” I answered myself, “Maybe because it has a Koala Bear? You like Koalas.” Regardless of the why, I figured that this was a sign to […]

Secret Agent, Number Nine! Secret Agent, Number Nine! They do cool stuff all the time!

Agent 9: Flood-A-Geddon! by James Burks

March 25, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Agent 9: Flood-A-Geddon! would make a great Nickelodeon like cartoon super spy story. There is adventure with silly characters, funky fun illustrations, a relatable narrator (who might be a bit annoying to the adult viewer/reader at times) and is overall a good time. James Burks authors and illustrates this graphic novel. I am not sure if it is book one in a series (it reads both as a first and second book in a series) but reads as if more is to come. And not […]

Fuzzy Baseball V04 Di-No Hitter by John Steven Gurney

March 25, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I loved the first book in the series Fuzzy Baseball by John Steven Gurney (illustrator of the A to Z Mysteries). And while I liked the second (Ninja Baseball Blast) as well, it was more of the same (the local baseball team plays baseball and learns lessons in sportsmanship, being good people and the game). I did not realize there was a third (R.B.I. Robots) out last spring, and I just received an e-book galley of number four, Di-No Hitter (due in mid-June 2021). This […]

What do a hippo, worm, lightbulb and a dinosaur have in common? Their books are mentioned in this review!

The Secret Rhino Society by Jonathan E. Jacobs

The Legend of King Arthur-A-Tops by Mo O’Hara

February 5, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was in a bit of a reading slump but realized that it was because I was not reading the right books. I was trying to read novels and was in the mindset for picture books. Those fun, clever little gems that takes a few minutes to read, but you feel accomplished after. After all, think of the child just reading; they cannot do War and Peace, but when they read a book of a few dozen pages, a few hundred words or so, and […]
