Picture book round up part… I’ve lost count

The Mighty Pollinators by Helen Frost

Too Much!: An Overwhelming Day by Jolene Gutierrez

Steve Irwin by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegar

July 28, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Helen Frost will have a new pollen book at the end of March-early April 2024 called The Mighty Pollinators. No, this is not a book and/or graphic novel about a new DC or Marvel movie of superheroes, but it is a book about the critters, insects, buggies, and even the wind, and how they make your garden, flowers, and more, grow. This is all done with fairly shorter poems that allow for the facts to be presented, but also in a fun and quick manner. […]

I’m a proud Odd Duck myself

Monti and Leo: A Newcomer in Pocketville by Sylvie Kantorovitz

Odd Duck by Sara Varon and Cecil Castellucci.

July 28, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Monti and Leo: A Newcomer in Pocketville was a “like” read for me, but not a LIKE read.  I enjoyed Sylvie Kantorovitz’s tale of two friends, but there were things that just felt “eh” to me. It was not so much the simplities of the illustrations (sometimes I am a fan of a causal approach; sometimes not as much) as they are expressive in their minimalist detailings, but perhaps something was not moving in the direction I was looking for.  The story is about the […]

To Market to find a present for Mama Cat

Market Day (I Like to Read Comics) by Miranda Harmon

July 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was looking at the online reader copies I have available to me, and up popped Market Day (I Like to Read Comics). I almost passed on this cute story that has all my pet peeves in reverse (more on that in a minute). But I decided to give Miranda Harmon’s January 2024 early reader a shot. Now either I missed it or the main characters are from another story, bit I never saw the names of the three main characters, but the publisher’s content gives […]

Octopus’ Garden

The Den That Octopus Built by Randi Sonenshine

Before the Seed: How Pollen Moves by Susannah Buhrman-Deever

July 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have probably mentioned before that I was never a science person. However, if I had been taught that science was not just chemicals and numbers and formulas maybe I would have been into it more (don’t get me wrong, I had good teachers, just some did not know how to teach me). Therefore, as an adult I am enjoying my journey into Seemingly-Non-Science-Science areas. And of course, I have found books to help me. Books that show nature is a science. And since I […]

When it hits home

Flooded by Mariajo Ilustrajo

July 27, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The picture book Flooded by Mariajo Ilustrajo hit close to home. Recently my state had serious flooding happen. (I went by business X early Sunday evening. By Monday the building was half underwater at the same time). My town, while thankfully mostly missed this last time, has already weathered at least three big storms and a bad winter flooding over the last decade. Thankfully, not first hand, but I know about flooding. I have a friend anytime a storm hits, she has PTSD (I would too […]

If Disney’s WALL-E met Noah’s Ark and narrated by all the nature hosts you know

The Last Zookeeper by Aaron Becker

July 26, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

is known for their wordless picture books. And The Last Zookeeper is another gem in that genre.  It is always funny to me to write a review about a book with no words. There is a quote from Jane Goodall at the start, but that is it in this  due mid-March 2024 Disney’s WALL-E meets Noah’s Ark story. The theme is simple, environmentalism. However, it goes deeper. The emotional pull of what happens if we do not pay attention to our world and that environment is […]
