In which I try, very hard, not to tell people exactly how stupid I find them

April 3, 2018 by melanir 8 Comments

I am so behind on reviews, but I’ve also been reading really slowly the past couple of months so it’s not as bad as it could be. Silver linings, right? Right. So, The Hate U Give, I finished this book back in February, and it was so good. It’s a contender for best book I’ve read this year, and to say that after only two months (or even four) is pretty bold. But I just think it’s an indication of how good it is. Before […]

“Now we have to somehow un-fuck everybody.”

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

March 9, 2018 by faintingviolet 5 Comments

Quick Review: This is a very good YA debut by Angie Thomas and it is important reading to be done in this cultural climate in the United States. Thomas clearly, and evocatively, brings the reader into the layered life of a black teen in today’s United States with its systemic racism. It reminded me of of my own history, and my lived experience, and grew it out. But it isn’t a primer in the way that Between the World and Me is, it is a […]

Not non-fiction but sadly it could be

February 27, 2018 by Rachie3879 1 Comment

Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give has made a lot of lists since it was published last year, so it was already on my to read list when the book club I’m trying out picked it for February. We just met last night to talk about it so I admit those discussion points might have muddied the waters for me. The Hate U Give is the story of Starr Carter, a young African-American woman from a town called Garden Heights attending a private school in […]

…so much more than that.

There were 13 reviews posted of this book in CBR9. There isn’t much more I can say about this book that hasn’t already been said by all of those wonderful reviewers here. While my life experience could not be farther from Starr Carter’s,  I’m thankful to Angie Thomas for giving me the opportunity to spend some time with her. The basic premise of the story has been discussed at length here and just about everywhere, so I’ll just list some of the things that will stay […]

Learning to live with the unimaginable – THUG LIFE

January 22, 2018 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

When I try to start this review, I am cowed at the prospect of it. What do I, a mid-30s white woman have to say about Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give, the story of Starr Carter, a sixteen year old young black woman growing up in the ghetto, who is a witness to the murder of not one, but two of her friends? What do I have to say about her experience, or about the experience of everyone in this book, so far removed […]

THUG gave me all the feels

December 30, 2017 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas deserves all the hype and awards. The story centers around teenager Starr Carter who lives in the African-American community of Garden Heights while attending an expensive private school on the posh side of town. She has two sides of her life, two faces she shows each environment. Her white boyfriend Chris has never met her Dad. Her friend Kenya, who she shares a half-brother with has never met any of her high school friends. The two worlds collide after […]
