“We didn’t call the police right away.”

Happiness Falls by Angie Kim

February 15, 2024 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This book is the “One Book One Community” pick for my local library this year and is the story of a family frantically searching for their missing father, told from the perspective of his 20-year-old daughter, Mia. From the opening sentence, “We didn’t call the police right away” I was gripped with Kim’s novel and Mia’s storytelling. I found this book to be very readable and hard to put down, and specifically catered to my literary and personal interests. First of all, done well I […]

“That was the thing about lies: they demanded commitment.”

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

I really liked this. I didn’t want to read it for the longest time, because I thought it was lit-fic (and it sort of was), but when I heard it was a courtroom drama/mystery, I immediately bought it. The premise also sounded like something pretty unique, and I wanted to see what the author could do with it. The Yoo family are immigrants from Korea, and run a business called Miracle Submarine in the small town of Miracle Creek. The sub in question is actually […]

We need to tell each other the ugly stuff, the stuff we’re ashamed of.

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

CANNONBALL!!!! Yikes. I signed up for the half to give myself some breathing room this year and here I am at a full with over a month left to go. I blame CBR Bingo! This was my book club’s pick for November. It kept popping up in all my normal bookish circles, prominently displayed at the library and virtually pushed by Amazon and Goodreads. Reading it, I suppose, was inevitable. After emigrating from Korea, Young and Pak Yoo work hard to forge a new life that […]

“That was the thing about lies: they demanded commitment. Once you lied, you had to stick to your story.”

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

Bingo Square: Own Voices* In Miracle Creek, Virginia, Young and Pak Yoo run the Miracle Submarine, an experimental medical treatment. Its users include Elizabeth and Kitt, both of whom have sons with autism; Teresa and her daughter Rosa, who has cerebral palsy; and Matt, a doctor with infertility. All are hoping for some miracle cure or even an improvement from this treatment. And the Yoos are hoping it changes their lives, in a slightly different way. Having come from Korea without her husband several years […]

Drama in the courtroom and beyond

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

April 21, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

Miracle Creek, Virginia, is the home of the Yoo family. The Yoos run a hyperbaric oxygen chamber out of a barn on their property. Their clients are patients who are looking for something- anything- that will help with various ailments and are desperate enough to turn to this “Miracle Submarine” for help. The novel begins with a catastrophe at the submarine and then shifts to a year later, on the first day of the courtroom trial related to said catastrophe. The novel shifts continually between […]
