This Might Be My Book of the Year

August 19, 2015 by ModernLove 5 Comments

Does a review count if I just say “This is amazing, go read it.” 25 times in a row? Because this book is amazing, go read it. I had several people (including a few Cannonballers) mention this book to me. I’m not normally a space-type of girl (spacey, however, is another story,) but holy shit you guys, picking this book up was the best decision I’ve made this summer. I had no idea what this book was even about when I bought it. Aliens? Alienation? Space […]

Have you read this yet? READ IT

August 19, 2015 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

Finally, after a slew of annoying-ass protagonists, I read The Martian, starring one of the best main characters I’ve read in a long time. I like Mark Watney. Everyone does. Too bad his crewmates left him on Mars! “He’s stuck out there. He thinks he’s totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man’s psychology?” He turned back to Venkat. “I wonder what he’s thinking right now.” LOG ENTRY: SOL 61 How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re […]

Seriously, why aren’t we worshipping duct tape?

July 27, 2015 by faintingviolet 9 Comments

I have a crush on Mark Watney. I feel like I need to get that out of the way. Also, why aren’t we worshipping duct tape? Okay, moving on. If asked, I would not consider myself a big fantasy or sci-fi reader, but that is obviously changing if you take a look at my last several books. I have figured out why I have shied away from these works in the past – more often than not they are about plot, plot, plot and not […]

All my fears were unfounded – of course I loved this book

July 8, 2015 by Malin 5 Comments

Six days into the first manned mission on Mars, there is a huge dust storm, forcing most of the crew to evacuate, earlier than anticipated. Mark Watney, the crew’s botanist and mechanical engineer is impaled on an antenna and believed to have died. He wakes up alone, stranded on Mars with no way of signalling Earth that he is still alive. The next manned mission to Mars is scheduled in four years’ time, and even if he were able to send a signal to announce […]

Seriously Mark? Seriously?

May 6, 2015 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I have read and listened to some really good books this year. It’s going to be hard to choose a top 5, but I’m pretty certain that The Martian will be on that list. The perilous adventures of Mark Watney are amazing – griping, funny, and weirdly educational. I got the audiobook with the intention of listening to it while I worked, but I was so enraptured by the story that I listened to the bulk of it for 7 hours straight. I highly recommend […]

Macgyver on Mars!

April 16, 2015 by Sophia 4 Comments

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now h’es sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars’ surface, completely alone, with no way to signal Earth that he’s alive. And even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone years before a rescue could arrive. Doesn’t that […]
